A businessman, who was convicted of instigating his driver to get two scapegoats for illegal parking offences committed by his friends, had his jail term reduced from six weeks to one on Friday.

Seah Hock Thiam had appealed against his sentence and conviction handed down last November. The 46-year-old is president of Esun International, which deals with the trading of scrap metal. His lawyer, Senior Counsel Davinder Singh, had argued in May that a fine would have been a sufficient punishment.

senior counsel, Mr (big D) Davinder..... for a frivolous convicted crime....

Another incident of why some say " the law is for the rich".
On this subject, also remind me of one govt whose ministers/mp's like to sue its opponents.

Freedom of speech, freedom of association and many other individual rights allow people to gather, discuss, criticise and hold to account their governments, from which the basis of a deliberative democracy is formed. The more people are involved with, concerned by and capable of changing how political power is exercised over their lives, the more acceptable and legitimate the law becomes to the people..............

Do we have freedom of speech/association and the right to gather freely?

Is issue of cleaning 2 hawker centre's roof one of integrity, law OR of suppression of political expression?

Leongsam will say that it is the motivation for people to become rich.

This Davinder Singh in the same reservist as me last time. Always never see him during ICT, either he is in on the first day and u won't see him again on the last day...and this was when he was an MP!!

can just about calculate how much the guy paid in legal fees... he must have felt it was worth it to try and escape jail

In almost all other cases, won't cut from 7 to 1. But Ah Thiam 'worked' for the right people.

Davinder is after money. But to argue such a case???? Someone must have tasked him to do it. THis case must rank as his most kuching kurup case.

There is no court argument and case lah. All wayang. In a normal court, the lawyer would have reprimanded for the suggestion made. The accused was clearly obstructing the law and had full intention of making a mockery of the law. If the lawyer push for 7 to 1, it would likely gotten contempt of court. But this guy got money and money guaranteed for future events PAP related is good enuff for who is the judge? to say yes. BTW, go Sentosa Cove. Speeding dangerously is normal for the rich and they have deposit in bank account for your TP to deduct for speeding - no need go court.

Seems that this guy is a good guy. He actually asked for his sentence to be started one week later so that he can help to raise $50K for a cancer-striken youth.

Good guy, yes. But quite a show-off. Not sure if it was his dad or mum who passed away recently. Wake was in Yishun or Chong Pang. Allowed gambling operators to use the wake as a front.

Not only $$$ from him. John and Pang Aik are $$$$-heavyweights and they will know what to do.
