Goh Meng Seng: WP in ‘internal turmoil’ over who to contest in Hougang by-election
Posted by temasektimes on February 24, 2012
The Workers Party may have averted a split’ with ex-Hougang MP Yaw Shin Leong throwing in the towel, but internal discord still exists over the choice of candidate to contest in the Hougang by-election, said former WP member Goh Meng Seng in an interview with a Chinese evening tabloid.
Though he is no longer a member of the Workers Party, Goh Meng Seng is still acting as its unofficial spokesperson as the mainstream media continues to quote his interesting ‘insights’ about the party.
Mr Goh has earlier predicted that WP might split if Mr Yaw contest his expulsion from the party, but the danger has subsided with him not appealing against the decision.
Long regarded as the protege of WP Chief Low Thia Kiang, Mr Yaw was unceremoniously sacked from the party last week for his failure to address allegations about his alleged extra-marital affairs with a few married women, including a neighbor from China.
While a by-election has not been called by the Prime Minister, there are rumors circulating around that a bitter split has occurred within the Workers Party over who to field.
Some CEC members are in favor of fielding one of the NCMPs Yee Jenn Jong or Gerald Giam, but Mr Low Thia Kiang appeared to favor his close associate Mr Png Eng Huat who was roped in to head the Hougang Constituency Committee this week.
Mr Goh said the ‘bickering’ within WP over the choice of candidate in Hougang may plunge the party into further ‘internal turmoil’ leading to a split in the party at its AGM this coming July.
A former CEC of WP, Mr Goh was forced to resign in the aftermath of the 2006 General Election for bringing WP into disrepute by embroiling in an online spat with a netizen.
