New self-service machines that are on trial at Changi Airport's Terminal 2 are letting travellers breeze through the boarding gates in under three seconds.

The do-it-yourself option is part of a bigger push by the airport for automation to boost productivity amid a tight labour market.

With the three automated kiosks at Gate E8, airport staff are no longer needed to do manual checks. All travellers have to do is scan their boarding passes to open the gate. From there, it is straight into the aircraft.

But security screening, as well as checks on prohibited items such as excessive amounts of liquids and gels, are still done before entry into the gatehold room, said Changi Airport Group's vice-president (terminal and ground operations) Albert Lim.

Self check in is a no brainer. After once you have a boarding pass in hand what else can you do ? It is self check in that is a test of our individual and organizational sophistication. That failed miserably. Even In KL LCCT AiRAsia managed to get this working. SQ couldn't do it in Singapore. That would really have been progress.

These gates effectively replace the final check performed by the airline staff to reconcile the airline seat manifest with the passenger name.

It's hardly rocket science...

This is done and driven by Lufthansa at gate E8 Terminal 2- not Changi Airports Group - they're in the process of rolling this out worldwide after earlier implementations in Germany

Knn, what abt Woodlands checkpoint? Still jam like shit everyday for past 30 years!

The Woodlands Train Checkpoint is a joke compared to JB Sentral and KL Sentral stations.

You walk out and there's only a crappy taxi stand.

Even the old Tanjong Pagar Railway station was much better.

Right. And just becos' Woodlands checkpoint is for peasants sinkies and muddies so they will never give a damn about the jams. While Changi airport must always remain atas for foreigners, fast and smooth. But if causeway no jams, HDB flats sure lelong... but then again, another 2 million new FTs will soon take over those flats.

Old Tanjong Pagar railway station was better as it was from the time when SG and MY was one.

Now every big or small improvement happening in Singapore is considered great achievement is it ? While every deterioration is considered no big deal or at worst called isolated incidents only...
