Many people assume that video games tend to have a detrimental effect on health. After all, one of the classic stereotypes about video game players is that they do nothing but eat junk food while sitting in front of a TV or computer screen all day.

Well, numerous studies say that this isn’t exactly true, and that on the contrary, video games can have many positive effects on your well-being, especially when it comes to your vision.

In 2007, a study by some US researchers found that playing video games actually improve your eyesight, instead of increasing the risk of future problems with your vision.

In fact, a study done in the University of Rochester suggested that playing action video games can change the way our brains process visual information. According to Daphne Bavelier, Professor of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, games can actually push the human visual system to its limits, thereby increasing its capabilities.

A 2009 study suggested something similar. When two groups were studied and told to play 50 hours of video games during a 9 week course, those who played action games showed enhanced contrast sensitivity.

It has even been suggested that the positive visual effects brought by video game playing could last for years, and could actually complement eye-correction techniques such as glasses and surgery.

So what are you waiting for? Try playing some games now and start improving your eyesight today!
