The Sandbar: Best Beach Bar in Lawrence and Home of the Indoor Hurricane!
Peach Madl opened the doors of The Sandbar in 1989 in beautiful Downtown Lawrence. Inspired by the free spirited lifestyle of Key West and the music of Jimmy Buffett, the Sandbar is a tiny oasis for people from all walks of life. From University of Kansas students and returning alumni to business people and tourists, the Sandbar's tiki-bar atmosphere has something for everyone.
The Sandbar is the top choice for tropical drinks in Lawrence. Enjoy one of our specialty drinks- the Bahama Mama, Shark Attack, or Dirty Banana- and the toys and beads that come with all of our tropical concoctions! In 2007, we were voted “Best Drink Trinket” by Pitch Weekly, a Kansas City entertainment publication.
Our little watering hole might be small, but we proudly claim the best jukebox in Lawrence. A nostalgic mix of dance and party music from the last seven decades entertains our customers, who can be found dancing on the bar to favorites like the “Car Wash” and “Shake Your Tailfeathers.”
The Indoor Hurricane attraction was added in 2002. The campy show features a mix of wind, rain, and lightning; mermaids dancing on the bar; and a video starring Sandbar friends and family. The Hurricane happens every night at 10 p.m.
The Sandbar offers an escape from everyday life- a place where you can kick back and relax with your favorite drink, chat with the bartenders, dance, or hang out on our outdoor patio.
