SINGAPORE - An elderly security guard who tried to stop a man, suspected to be drunk, from urinating at a shopping centre stairwell has succumbed to his wounds after a month in hospital.

The incident happened at 11.47pm on Nov 18, 2014 at Fajar Shopping Centre at Bukit Panjang, reported Shin Min Daily News.

The guard, known as Mr Zhou, had tried to stop the man from urinating at the stairwell when the man punched him to the ground, which caused Mr Zhou to sustain head injuries and, eventually, fall into a coma.

He died in hospital on Dec 22.

According to the Chinese language newspaper, Mr Zhou, 74, was on night shift duty at the shopping centre, while the perpetrator was a 51-year-old man who worked at a food stall.

Another guard at the shopping mall told reporters that Mr Zhou had only been working there for a month before the incident, and that on the night of the incident they had received a complaint from a member of the public that a drunk man was urinating at the first floor stairwell.

It is believed that Mr Zhou had gone to investigate when he was beaten to the ground and hit his head.

He was rushed to National University Hospital after officers from the Singapore Civil Defence Force arrived. It was while he was in hospital that he fell into a coma, said the report.

A police spokesperson confirmed that they had conveyed the man to hospital on Nov 18 and that the man had died on Dec 22.

Police also revealed that the perpetrator was detained on Dec 18 and was charged in court on Dec 20.

Not worth risking one's life to stop someone else from urinating. When someone needs to go he has to go. Especially much more easier you feel looser after some alcohol.

The town councils should take care of any urines in HDB flats.

Just imagine giving a state funeral for doing this. Looks damn strange.

Why not? China's history is full of old warriors. Haven't you heard of Huang Zhong, the old general from the Three Kingdoms?

A security guard is suppose to protect the people and the property from any threats, same as a fighting general.

Elderly people tend to not provide good security. But don't let this inconvenient truth get in the way of unbridled cost cutting measures for Singapore Inc.

Youth and strength vs experience.

Which guard do you think is most suitable for your security needs?

So you're an old man who voted for no minimum wage, no pension, no return of CPF, more foreigners, and no retirement? I applaud

the man died because he is doing his job.
the government must make sure the assailant got the most penalty they can give
else no one is encouraged to do such job

worst still if you are the 3rd party would you want to get involved ?
