The rebirth of Chee Soon Juan – Sept 7, 2015
The man that the late Lee Kuan Yew had tried very hard to put down has bounced back on the scene with a force few could have predicted possible.
As the campaigning intensified across the land, Dr. Chee Soon Juan, US-trained psychologist, began to attract mega-crowds particularly of young professionals.
Dressed in flaming red, the leader of the Singapore Democratic Party has been attracting large crowds second only to those at Workers Party rallies.
They lined the field, spilling across overhead bridges to listen and cheer. Long lines queued for him to sign on a book he had written.
“He was like a rock star,” said a middle-age man.
It was a scene rarely seen before at political rallies in Singapore. If there’s only one GE2015 really significant creation it is the coming of political age of Chee, who was once called ‘a mad man’ by the late prime minister.
Dr. Chee was arrested and jailed several times for political activities, as well as sued for defamation when Lee Senior was in power.
Now barely months after his demise, Chee – articulate and appealing - has bounced back with a vengeance, proving how right Lee had long been in predicting his potential threat to the PAP.
