The Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) has proposed a health-care scheme where each citizen pays the Government $50 a month for heavily subsidised medical services.

The poor and unemployed will pay less. Permanent residents pay more.

The money collected then goes to a national fund that pays for 90 per cent of most treatments for all residents. Besides the expected $1.3 billion from individuals, the Government puts in another $10.5 billion.

With this system, modelled on similar ones in Britain and Taiwan, the current '3Ms' system of Medisave, MediShield and Medifund would be scrapped, said the SDP.

10.5 billion is no joke. Not sure where they got the figure 1-2 billion easier to solve. Have lots of healthcare lotteries which 100million, I understand. But at 10.5 billion, that is no shit. Even if the govt takes out a bond to create the initial sum, how much are they according to each person for this calculation? What is the outlay per yet for this fund? Is the fund after hitting the numbers self sustaining? Money put in must grow and cannot just be spent like that.

first and foremost, does anyone need to cough out $50 to the gov for medical care? imagine the poor and needies having to cough out that amount of money per month. isn't this adding into their financial burden? how often one go see a dr and how much each time it cost by visiting a polyclinic?

sdp is so always out of synch with the ground that sometime i wonder they even have a brain to begin with.

thank god! none of those cartoons got into parleement, or else.......(shake head)
