I admire them for their guts, committment and sacrifices. They give so much of themselves and get practically nothing in return. Yet they persevere. Detractors treat them as clowns but I say again these people are not the impulsive fools that they have been made out to be. They have great self-belief!

I agree with jw5 that CSJ could indeed have achieved much more for the average Singaporean inside Parliament rather than outside but then the PAP did go to extraordinary lengths and pulled out all the stops to "fix" him and finished him off politically by bankrupting him. He was supposed to be a congenital liar and a cheat. He was also branded a traitor; a shouting madman etc.

The best I can say of him is that he soldiers on despite all the odds. He is no quitter. He is smart, humble and patient. Many wanted him dead and buried. He just refused to give up. He is no fake opposition! Above all, he is true to his ideals and principles! PAP kept studiously quiet when many of Chee's ideas were ridiculed at first but "adopted" later as PAP's own; suitably disguised and modified of course. Madman? Certainly not! Traitor? Far from it! American puppet? Fools may believe! As far as I'm concerned, he is a very brave man.

That's why I said that he should have grinned, gritted his teeth and taken it at the beginning.
In other words, faked it and pretended.
It started with the expenses for the thesis, didn't it? He should have just explained the situation, apologised to all concerned, and continued being the "nice good guy" and slowly worked his way through the election process and into parliament. Rather than being so combative and principled and antagonistic, albeit to a bunch of slimies.
It's easy to be wise after the event, but he could be doing much more for singaporeans.

You're right, at the end of the day, it's about winning elections.
Not so much about who makes the best points or who has the moral high ground.
If you don't win, you can't really do anything to change things for the better.

SDP can't win elections. Chee can't even contest. It's a pity because Chee is probably most knowledgeably and eloquent opposition around and would make an excellent opposition MP / "attack dog" questioning PAP policies in parliament.

Chee can be our Chiu Yi.
