Anyone involved in a WikiLeaks-like incident in Singapore should be dealt with firmly, said Minister for Law and Home Affairs K. Shanmugam in Parliament.
Mr Shanmugam was replying to questions on what Singapore would do in the wake of the unintended disclosure of the classified communications of United States diplomats by whistle- blowing website WikiLeaks in recent months.
Mr Shanmugam said the Government would investigate all cases of leaks of official secrets and classified information, and officers responsible would be prosecuted.
This is regardless of whether or not they are public servants
He added that the Government has been consistent in taking this approach and has, on occasion, charged private citizens for their involvement in leaking government data.
So has the Government been ”consistent” in taking this approach? Hell NO, not by a million miles!
An editorial piece on The Temasek Review dated 7th October 2010 reported on the case of one Dr Ong who during a police investigation, supposedly admitted he was one of the previous founders of Temasek Review to the investigating officer at Ang Mo Kio Police Division.
The said information, obtained in the course of a police investigation should be classified and confidential but somehow it was leaked to a reporter from The New Paper Ms Ng Wan Ching, who eventually used it in a week-long smearing campaign against Dr Ong.
It was reported that Dr Ong had filed an official complaint with the Permanent Secretary of Home Affairs Mr Benny Lim, on the possible leak of confidential information by Ang Mo Kio Police Division to the TNP reporter Ms Ng Wan Ching (Ref: Police leaked confidential information to The New Paper journalist?).
The same case was also reported on Singapore Democrats’s website and online blogs. A concerned social worker Mr Ravi Philemon even wrote to the Commissioner of Police calling for a full and impartial investigation into the allegations to avoid “eroding the public’s confidence in the police force”.
In a letter addressed to the Commissioner of Police Ng Joo Hee, Mr Ravi asked:
”if (the allegations are) true what courses of actions are being taken by SPF to prevent such incidents from happening again. And if untrue what course of action SPF will take to refute these allegations.”
Assuming that the formal complaint by Dr Ong did not end up in the thrash folder of Mr Benny Lim’s desktop, given a period of 3 months and a classic textbook case to begin with, the investigation should have been completed with the culprit taken to task.
However to date, both the complainant Dr Ong and Mr Ravi have not heard from the Police or any agency, for that matter.
To quote the “assurance” from Minister for Home Affairs Mr K. Shanmugam, “This is regardless of whether or not they are public servants“.
Given the non-action by the authorities on the aforesaid case, should we believe that K. Shanmugam will “walk the talk” and order a full investigation into the allegations or should we dismiss his latest “assurance” as another “talk the cock” session in parliment?

When private companies do illegal stuff and involved in bad behaviour, whistle blowers are protected and the companies involved in fraud are prosecuted.

When gov involves in fraud and bad behaviour, whistle blowers are prosecuted and gov are protected.

Talk about double standard. What if gov is lying to it's citizens and hiding the truth? Whistle blowers are prosecuted because of exposing the lies of the gov? Any logic?

What if the gov runs some sinister operation of unspeakable crime under the guise of "Top secret"?

This law is perfect for breeding a deceitful gov.
