Why not? Maybe he just didn't find his perfect working place yet. The year off is also a great thing to do in my opinion, reasons are not so important here.
It took me long time to find something i want to do in life, that was my current business, which is 90% remote. With the microsoft teams calling i can get in touch with the customers and our team within couple of seconds and we don't need to have face to face meeting often.
