SINGAPORE — Over a three-year period, a secondary school discipline master took 170 upskirt videos of multiple women, including his colleagues, students, and a female relative.
The 49-year-old married man, a father of three, pleaded guilty to three counts of insulting a woman's modesty on Friday (2 September), according to a
Strait Times report.
A gag order was imposed on the teacher's identity and details on the school, where he had taught since 2008 till his suspension in July 2018, to protect the victims' identities.
Asked women to come to his workstation
Between April 2015 and July 2018, the man filmed over 150 upskirt videos of at least 38 female colleagues, mostly teachers.
He would ask the women to come over to his workstation to key in data at his desk, while placing his mobile phone under their skirts.
He filmed several such videos of at least seven female students during the same period, using a similar method. The man had also filmed a female relative at a party his mother-in-law hosted at her house.
On one occasion, he confiscated the phone of a male student punished by the school for filming two upskirt videos of a female teacher, on the pretext of retrieving evidence.
Instead, the man used his own phone to record the boy's videos.
The man then transferred the recordings videos to his hard disk where he kept his own collection.
How his offences were discovered
According to
The Straits Times, his offences came to light after a female teacher – one of his victims – suspected that he had been taking such videos and alerted the police in July 2018.
The man is no longer teaching in any school.
On Friday, a judge granted the man's defence lawyer's request to assess his suitability for a mandatory treatment order (MTO), after hearing that the man had allegedly suffered from major depressive disorder during his offences.
An MTO, which lasts up to 36 months, is given to those deemed to be suffering from psychiatric disorders, so that they can undergo psychiatric treatment instead of serving jail time. Upon the successful completion of the order, offenders will not have a criminal record for the particular offence.
He is expected to be sentenced next month. For each count of insulting a woman's modesty, the man faces a maximum jail term of one year or a fine, or both.
