SINGAPORE: The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) is getting a court injunction against Mustafa Centre to close part of its building for breaching safety violations. According to SCDF, these include "serious episodes of overcrowding".

A pre-trial conference was held on Tuesday, and the case will be heard again next Wednesday.

In January this year, Mustafa centre was fined S$17,000 for two charges of fire safety violations in its premises.

SCDF said the centre was fined for overcrowding and also for using the external corridor for retail purposes without a permit.

The centre has chalked up some 37 counts of fire safety violations over the past three years.

what a dumb move. I read the report in the Chinese papers, they ask for closure of the first level so that people don't congregate there.

Who ask you to bring in so much foreign workers who thronged there? And, simple logic tells you, you close off the first level, Mustapha will have to display their wares to the other levels, you are spreading the load elsewhere and also, the first level is always builit stronger and to withstand heavier load, so instead of 4 storeys to cater to 1000 people, you have 3 stories to cater to 1000 people, you tell me, is it easing congestion or not?

And in case of fire, which have a higher probability of escape? Trapped on the first floor where the main exits are or trapped on the 2nd floor where you either fly through the window or get stampeded.

Trust SCDF to come up with this sweeping the dirt under the carpet decision and the court to listen to it.
