I had to help friend who is depressed after his NS too, and honestly, it was tough because he wouldn't open up at first. Encouraging him to talk to someone outside our group really made a difference. He eventually agreed to join mental health talks and got support. Just being there without pushing helped a lot.

Depression may take root in school, NS or at the workplace. Our Strawberry Generation cannot possibly be shielded everywhere they go to.compare to NS in the 70s and 80s .... the strawberries generations are more suitable to serve the Drone Battalions in their bedrooms for NS ...

Former schoolmates and friends who served NS in SCDF and SPF all admitted that they had it good. Anything beats the rigours of jungle training; it's not just the physical demands, but the heat, dirt and discomfort that are a soldier's worst enemies. I notice police officers buying food at hawker centres all the time; they don't rely on combat rations or cookhouse food like we SAF NSF did.

I have a friend's son who returned from UK to serve his NS; he was bullied and ostracised by platoon mates simply because he spoke with a British accent, having been born in London to S'porean parents who have been working there since graduating from a university in England. It didn't help that the NSF couldn't speak Mandarin.

The shift in attitude towards hardship of this current generation is seriously unbelievable. Of course NS causes depression. When we a all loaded up in 3 tonners at Mindef every single one of us was fucking depressed. We had to brace ourselves to withstand an onslaught of physical AND mental abuse that was going to last for months.
The horrific treatment included 3 am standby bed on a regular basis which included having our boots thrown out of a 3rd story window. The amount of Kiwiblack needed to repair the damage was significant. It took more than one tin and many hours of work.
Going home on Saturday was never a given. Extra drill sessions were dished out at a whim on Saturday afternoons and by the time we could book out it was almost time to return to camp again.
Everyone went through hell but I do not recall a single diagnosis of "depression" by any doctor. We pushed through and came out the other end stronger.
And parents would have been the last people on earth to admit that one of their children lacked the mental fortitude to handle hardships. Pursuing legal redress would be unthinkable. It would bring shame upon the whole family.
I guess "shame" had disappeared from the sinkie psyche too.
