Scathing review of goodwood park hotel

Once charming property burdened by age and poor upkeep

The iconic Goodwood Park Hotel has certainly seen better days; an undeniable weariness loomed large in the meandering corridors of the main block leading to the reception counters. Restaurants (plus resident tailoring tenant) flanking both sides were of another era -both dull in spirit and stiffly pretentious. Even the once sophisticated L’Espresso cafe has gotten tediously irrelevant in no small part thanks to the collection of dark colored, dated furniture and cheerless lighting deployed on its premises since forever. Sipping a cuppa amidst an undeniable stoic gloom washing over surely begs reconsideration of venue for a decent afternoon tea session. In short: tired, DEAD TIRED.

An unsmiling but efficient staff member administered the checking in process, however another tasked with directing us to our room mucked up by actually losing his way around; we were thus left stranded waiting while he ran off seeking help. Alas, things straightened out and we arrived at the assigned heritage room-situated next to housekeeping with its door left ajar. Aaaaah, blimey.

More than 180 food poisoning cases could be linked to Goodwood Park durian pastries
SINGAPORE - A total of 183 food poisoning cases "could be linked" to the popular durian pastries prepared at the Goodwood Park Hotel bakery as at Tuesday (May 3).

"Since the news (of its licence suspension) broke in the media, more (people) have stepped forward to notify that they too, may have been affected after consumption of the durian pastries," said the Health Ministry (MOH), National Environment Agency (NEA) and Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) in a statement on Thursday (May 5). The bakery's licence was suspended with effect from April 22.

After the first cluster of five cases was reported on March 15, MOH and NEA investigated but no hygiene lapses were found. There were no other cases in the following weeks, so these were treated as isolated cases.

But, about three weeks later, a second cluster of cases was reported on April 4. MOH stepped up investigations, sending food samples for testing and food handlers for screening. Later, more cases were reported from April 12, with increasing numbers during the week of April 18.
