TR Emeritus (TRE) earlier reported that SBS Transit had been
going from town to town in China to recruit PRC bus drivers to work in Singapore
(see: SBS Transit going from town to town in China to recruit driver
and SBS recruiting another 50 bus drivers from China‘).

In one of the job advertisements, it said that drivers can earn as much as
S$1,413 per month:

  • Base pay: S$1,025
  • Allowance: S$154
  • Overtime pay: S$234 (min 36 hours per month)

Also, SBS Transit would be providing accommodation (worth at least another
few hundred SGD per month) for these foreign drivers.

TRE then wrote to SBS Transit and asked:

Appreciate if you could explain why SBS is going all over the place in
China to recruit drivers instead of trying to hire our
locals?

SBS Transit has since replied. This is what a spokeswoman from SBS Transit
said:

We are recruiting locally of course but supply is insufficient to meet
requirements. If you know of any Singaporean who would like to join us as Bus
Captains please do let me know.

She said that “supply is insufficient to meet requirements”. And if there are
Singaporeans out there who would like to work as a “Bus Captain” (i.e, bus
driver), you may wish to contact SBS Transit directly.

So, assuming SBS Transit is getting their drivers to work up to the legal
limit of 44 hours a week with overtime of another 9 hours a week (i.e, about 36
hours of overtime per month), we are talking about 53 hours a week. Working for
6 days a week with 1 day rest, we are then talking about 9 hours a day.

So, if you would like to drive 9 hours a day for 6 days a week to be paid
S$1,413 a month, you may wish to contact SBS Transit now as they are currently
hiring.

It is not known if SBS Transit will be providing accommodation to local
drivers or not.

SBS, please lah! Show some compassion and kindness to low income
Singaporeans. Stop twisting words like more pay with longer OT. Where is your
conscience? The Chinese saying, “born a child without anus” 生儿没屁眼" is a good
warning to those who don’t commit good deeds. We can spend 53 million
maintaining a park, 9.6 billion on defence, 36 million no bond scholarship for
foreigners, buy Herman miller chair, buy Brompton bikes and there SBS is playing
the salary games to deprive Singaporeans from getting a decent job. Don’t be an
arse hole. If you believe in the existence of ghost, Allah, god, deities, please
please please show compassion and display your kindness. Don’t be curse by the
nature. I tell you don’t over do it, there is really retribution.

MOM should sue SMRT/SBS.
For promoting false employment info. Salary included OT.
Basic salary is not included OT/benefit/allowance......

Like that next time cleaning company should promote salary up to $2k/month(included benefit/OT min 80hr).

Hahaha! If locals applied, This will be SBS Spokeswoman's reply with a "BUT...Regret to inform you that your application...We wish you all the best in your..We thank you for.."

All they need to do is to pay Sinkies 3k a month and there will be takers for the job. With the obscene profits made, I cannot understand why they can't do that.

its a mistake at the beginning. they should not go public listed. now they are only accountable to shareholders.

I share SBS problem, gov giving them billion if $$$ to buy buses, if not enought driver will kana but Gov. So the only solution go to prc to look for cheap drive, want to pay peanut and want King Kong .

something isn't very right about the pay table:

In one of the job advertisements, it said that drivers can earn as much as
S$1,413 per month:

Base pay: S$1,025
Allowance: S$154
Overtime pay: S$234 (min 36 hours per month)

the one highlighted as "overtime pay". $234 for 36hrs. does it means that using $234 divided by 36 OT hr which ends up as only $6.50 per hr overtime?

if that's the case, SBS is a bloody slave-driver!! OT is calculated at 1.5 times per hourly rate which means a sbs bus-driver rate is only $4.33 per hr.

can't blame SBS. Their sinkie drivers all quitting to become $7000 pm taxi drivers.

I'm sure more Sinkies would apply if SBS Transit improved the working hours and wages significantly.
But you should know who really owns the 'privatized' SBS Transit/Comfort DelGro, and whose interests their business decisions serve.
