MALAYSIA - A 24-year-old communications executive ended up losing RM47,000 (S$18,800) of her family's savings after a whirlwind relationship with a man she met on Facebook last year.
Kosmo! reported that the ardent suitor told her that he was a bachelor who was doing business with a government agency.
"He seemed to know my background. He knew where I lived. I was opened to getting to know him. We communicated regularly through SMSes. We even met once when he visited me at my office in Ipoh," she said.
The man then claimed his mother was sick and that he was facing financial difficulties.
"I started depositing money into several bank accounts from last year up until March 15. I even gave money to a woman who claimed to be the secretary of his company," she said.
However, she began to suspect something was amiss when the man uploaded a photograph of himself holding wads of RM50 and RM100 notes onto his Facebook account.
"I was also contacted by a woman who claimed to be his wife. I felt cheated and demanded my money back but I could not find him and he was no longer picking up my calls."
She said she had lodged a report at the Sungai Senam police station on Sept 18.
