You may not realise that the price of shampoos are slowly but surely rising. From the nondescript to the high end brands it may cost you from $8 to $30 and even more. Do not believe in their adverts how wonderful their brands are and it will remove dandruff etc. Dandruff is common in tropical countries and if you do not shampoo the oil off your hair it will re-occur no matter what fantastic brands you use. Moreover, using the same brand all the time loses it's effectiveness as the bacteria develop resistance.

My suggestion is to use baking soda which remove the oil from your hair and scalp. It is cheap and biodegradable and easily available. I have not tried apple cider but I use a conditioner to soften my hair.

Try it yourself and if you do not like it, you can always switch back. Nothing will happen to your hair that I can assure you. Some of my friends are using it and of course my family. I save some money on shampoos. Those with women folks at home will save much more. :D

Shampoo, if you will:
1 Tbsp baking soda
1 cup water

Conditioner:
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1 cup water
10-20 drops essential oil (I used lavendar)

For extra earth points: reuse your own plastic bottles!

To wash:

Rinse hair.
Shake up the baking soda mix. The baking soda won’t dissolve in water.
Pour/apply onto your hair. It won’t be sudsy, so it might be hard to tell. Just be sure to get a little all over your hair.
Massage into your scalp.
Rinse off.
Shake up the apple cider vinegar mix just a tad (it’s not really necessary).
Pour/apply onto your hair. This won’t be sudsy either, so just apply some everywhere you’d like it to go. Your hair will probably begin to soften under such lusciously simple ingredients. Mine does!
Rinse off.

Thanks for this useful tip..

Will recommend my wife to use baking soda instead..

Not hopeful that I'll get a positve response from her, but I'll try..:)

me use head and shoulders at $9.90 for the big bottle. i like to patronise those shops with aunties that sell these kind of grooming, beauty and personal care products. it's much cheaper than supermarts.

Use it on yourself first and use a good brand like what I am using and it is dirt cheap "Arm & Hammer" a trusted brand made in the States. If in doubt there are many websites that confirms what I posted.

In the US, an Arm & Hammer basic toothpaste costs $3.65. Cheap??

Why are you wanting to buy toothpaste? Just buy the baking soda and if you want cheapest, there are local brands.

Seriously get a second job if you have to save on shampoo.

You said "Arm & Hammer" is dirt cheap and I am saying it is not. In the US, the prices for "Arm & Hammer" is average.

Ps. No, I don't need to go cheap, just Colgate, Pantene will do fine.

Obviously dirt cheap as in baking soda not brand. I mentioned the baking soda brand because it is well-known. At less than S$4 per 454 gms one can use it for about 50 hair washes compared to using your Pantene which may cost about $13? No one is talking about toothpaste whether Arm & Hammer or Colgate.

P.S. Since this is Singapore why bother to talk about prices in the States?

Wow this thread is really retarded. Making your own shampoo. U save like perhaps $12 over a period of two months. Maybe you should grow your own veggies in your HDB flat and have them for dinner.

sumzing wrong wif database again? ... juz now saw got ah middaydog's post in here, but cant c it inside here ...

I like head and shoulders too. It's a dandruff killer. :o

$9.90 for the big bottle - 750 ml? That sounds a little expensive, especially if you get from those smalll shops, should be able to get for $8.90..
U are right about those small shops, cheaper than supermarkets or even Mustapha.

no la ... it kills wat dandruff u have on ur head @ ze time wen u raba-raba ur head wif it oni ... :o

Exactly why I recommend baking soda as nothing can remove dandruff once it sets in, In this tropical heat, the perspiration encourages dandruff and require frequent washing of hair. Baking soda is effective for a few days and likewise shampoo. Washing hair everyday with baking soda does no harm because it is safer than shampoo which has lots of chemicals and additives we do not know what rubbish they put into the concoction.

Was thinking the same. The last time I brought a new bottle shampoo was like 2-3 months ago. Penny wise, pound foolish in this case?

There are many uses of baking soda, as a cleaning agent and odour removal its pretty cheap to use as well.
