SINGAPORE : For the first time, Saudi Arabia has sent an all-female group to attend various degree and masters programmes at Singapore's National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University.
The 48 girls are here under the King Abdullah Scholarship Programme.
The Kingdom said besides Singapore's high education standards, the students are also here because of the Republic's safe living condition and multi-cultural environment.
The students were given a rousing welcome by the Saudi Cultural Office, in collaboration with the National Library Board and Singapore Tourism Board.
Rowa Barashi, a student at the National University of Singapore, said: "What I like about Singapore is the multi-culture here in Singapore. There are many people from many religions, so I don't have any problem wearing the scarf and there are many people the same as me."
Saudi Arabia Ambassador to Singapore, Dr Jamil M Merdad, said: "Singapore is the preferred place for our female students for so many reasons. One is the social values here. When they come to Singapore, they are very much at home - their ability to walk around safely in the streets."
Prof Abdul Ghaffar S Bazuhair, Cultural Attache, Saudi Arabia Cultural Office, said: "Something significant in Singapore is the security. The students feel so secure as well as everything is well organised."
