As spiritual guru Sathya Sai Baba lies critical in hospital, his devotees in Mumbai have started praying for his quick recovery.
At the Sri Sathya Sai organisation’s Mumbai headquarters — Dharmakshetra at Mahakali Caves Road, Andheri — his followers have been chanting the Gayatri Mantra daily for his health. On Friday, hundreds of devotees gathered for a ‘Sanjeevani Maha Mrutyunjaya Havan’ at the centre and on Monday, they organised a 10-hour ‘Akhand Bhajan’ for their guru’s health. On Thursday, there will be a ‘Laksharchana’ or chanting of god’s name one lakh times at the centre.
Sathya Sai Baba, who is based in Puttaparthi in Andhra Pradesh, was admitted to the organisation-run Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences at Prasanthigram on March 28 with chest and lung congestion. The health report issued on Tuesday by the hospital said his condition had deteriorated; he was on a ventilator and a dialysis machine.
“The Maha Mrutyunjay Mantra that we had on Friday is a chant to sustain life,” Nimish Pandya of Mumbai-based Sri Sathya Sai Trust said. “Devotees have been praying for the guru out of love. We had the Akhand Bhajan on Monday. We have asked devotees to continue with their prayers at home. His health parameters are now stable and he is responding well to treatment. Our prayers seem to have been answered.”
Several devotees are angry about media reports that their spiritual leader is seriously ill. Andheri resident Sham Uchil said, “There is no need to be alarmed. Devotees have been praying and a series of prayers are being offered at Puttaparthi and other places.”
Pratap Thakkar, a trustee at the Andheri centre, said several unnecessary things had been written. “Everybody is praying for his recovery,” he said.

Sathay Sai Baba was rushed to the hospital after he complained of breathlessness. The doctors conducted check ups and found out that Baba was suffering from lung infection and fluids in the lungs.
The doctors however have stated that Baba is quite fine and there is nothing to worry at all. Trust board member Ratnakar also asked the devotees not to worry as Baba’s health was quite all right now.
