The cake is ‘dry’ because they have substituted the cow’s butter with palm oil which is much cheaper ingredient.

I also suspect the Sara Lee here is not from Australia but made in Malaysia.

Many high ses AMDk brands will substitute the more expensive fat/oil with cheap palm oil when they manufactured for lower ses cuntries due to pricing. For example the Chocolates in Europe taste much better than those manufactured in Malaysia due to substitution of cocoa fat.

I think our no halah hawkers should use pig lard instead of palm oil which causes a lot of health issues such as diabetes.

The three tragic causes of Sara Lee's voluntary administration in Australia

Sunrise host Nat Barr has led a growing chorus of heartbroken Aussies pleading for Sara Lee to be saved after the frozen desserts company collapsed, as a retail expert reveals where it all went wrong for the Aussie icon.

The much-loved Australian company has been plunged into voluntary administration, putting 200 jobs at risk.

Famous for its frozen treats, including apple pies, cheesecakes, sticky date pudding and ice cream, Sara Lee has been a family favourite in Aussie households for more than half a century.

A desperate hunt has been launched to find a new buyer to rescue Sara Lee from the brink of demise as business experts weighed into the possible cause.

Sara Lee is among dozens of well-known Australian brands that have collapsed in 2023 alone.

'We've seen this with a lot of companies. They just can't keep up with the mass production of whether it's international products or the cutting of costs,' Sydney business expert Amanda Rose explained.

'A white knight needs to come along and maybe reinvent it into something else. But we do need Sara Lee in our lives.'

Business experts believe a lack of advertising, investment and marketing contributed to the company's downfall, along with consumers turning to rival brands and cheaper products.

'The cost of producing these goods has increased and we've also got increased competitiveness from other brands,' Meg Elkins from RMIT's school of Economics, Finance and Marketing told 3AW.

'Sometimes, with inflation, we opt for the cheapest choice, and eventually, we pay the price ......and we lose these very iconic brands'

'Perhaps there is a marketing element but there's so many elements to a business that we need to take into consideration.'

The shock news sparked an outpouring of grief and fond childhood memories from sweet tooths who grew up on the dessert staple.

Aussies rushed to the shops to stock up on Sara Lee before they ran out, including the Sunrise team, who tucked into the treats on-air for breakfast on Thursday.

'We have one of our producers on his way to the shops right now because, you know what, a lot of us haven't bought one for while,' Barr said during a panel discussion.

'Let's save Sara Lee. It's all our faults.'

Iconic frozen desserts company Sara Lee, which once had celebrity Sophie Monk (pictured) as its advertising face, has collapsed into administration
Perth lord mayor and TV personality Basil Zempilas added: 'It's the end of an icon and an era.'

'If we all went to the supermarket and brought home a cheesecake, maybe we can save the company one Australian at a time.'

Sunrise co-host Matt 'Shirvo' Shirvingtondescribed it as a sad day for Australia.

'I'm so going to buy one when I go home,' he said.

The news sparked a divided debate online.

'The taste of my childhood! Always still slightly frozen. Someone needs to swoop in and save them!' one Aussie said.

Another added: 'That's so wrong another Aussie business gone so sad their products are nice, going miss it.'

A third wrote: 'Xmas has been ruined!'

But many others weren't surprised to hear about Sara Lee's demise.

'If all these companies didn’t put the prices up so much people would be able to afford more. I stopped buying the “fancier” stuff like this cause we just can’t afford it now!' another woman wrote.

A second added: 'If you think about it, they havent done any advertising in forever... (even Coke advertise). These days to not advertise is a huge mistake.'

Nat Barr joined the bandwagon for Sara Lee to be saved during a panel discussion with Basil Zempilas and Amanda Rose
Vaughan Strawbridge, Kathryn Evans and Joseph Hansell of FTI Consulting have been appointed as voluntary administrators for Sara Lee.

'The Australian Sa Lee business has a long history of producing desserts including frozen cheesecakes, pies, crumbles and ice cream, using quality, authentic ingredients,' the administrators said.

'The Australian-based manufacturing business trades as Sara Lee under license from the global owner of the trademark, with rights to operate in Australia, New Zealand, South East Asia and the Middle East.

'The appointment to the company is intended to seek a restructuring and sale of the Sara Lee business, while continuing operations.'

Mr Strawbridge believes there will be great interest from various firms in taking over the company, which once had TV star Sophie Monk as its ambassador.

'We are working with Sara Lee's management team and staff to continue operations while we secure the future of the business,' he said.

'We are immediately commencing a process to sell or restructure the business and continue its long history of manufacturing in Australia.

'We expect a lot of interest in the business and will work with those parties and stakeholders to achieve an outcome as soon as possible to secure the ongoing business and provide clarity to its loyal and committed staff and customers.'

The company, which employs about 200 people, was established in Lisarow on the NSW Central Coast in 1971.

The Australian firm - which has been in operation for more than 50 years - is famous for its frozen treats including apple pies (pictured), cheesecakes and ice cream
Its website says its 'bakers and pastry chefs create delicious desserts and baked goods for Australians and New Zealanders every day, using traditional baker's flour, real eggs and fresh cream'.

The company was founded in Chicago, USA by Charles Lubin, who named his first bakery after his daughter, Sara Lee in the 1930s.

Sophie Monk was the face of a recent advertising campaign for the company.

In Monks' ad, wearing silk cream pyjamas and bathed in morning sunlight, she took spoonfuls of crème brulee in between crooning lyrics to Celine Dion's power ballad All My Myself.

Monk belted out the words to the ballad in her apartment singing 'When I was young I used to eat with everyone/Sharing dessert was so fun... Those days are gone.'
