Yes 16:9 is standard but making the phone narrower has all along been an Apple philosophy for a phone, something you can hold and use in one hand. You need a larger screen, then go straight for a tablet which you have to use with two hands and why stop at 5", why not 7"to 8" which is what mini iPad is about? A phone that uses a stylus also intrudes into the two handed tablet territory. Question is if it is two handed, why not larger. These are the key design parameters. The OS is the creamy part you spread on top of this.
While tablet are ideal for surfing, it jus too big for a phone...strictly speaking 3" is more then enuff if u r using nothing but phone and sms function...while the "surfing" part hab to shink...de "phone" part had to increase...for the ultimate all in one solution...unfortunately all in one usually oso means best at nothing...but if user die die oni want to carry 1 device...den Note will suit em better...personally...even if i have a Note...i wont use the stylus much...cant say de same for moi colleagues...they seem bery happy poking the screen...:p
I have argued somewhere that having a larger screen to help old people see better is false science. Except in the early onset of presbyopia, a larger screen will not help someone who cannot focus on anything within arms length. He will still reading glasses.
I am still having the Ipod Touch which i never "touch" it for more then a yr leow...moi find the screen too small for surfing and reading...i nid to put on moi reading glass every time i use it...progressive lens had a small corridor for viewing near distance and i nid to tilt n adjust my head constantly to read an article frm top to bottom screen...dis is tiring n it expose my age...moi dun reali look like someone who nid a progressive lens...yet...:p:p
For someone without a vision problem, all you need to do is to hold the phone closer to you and achieve the same effect as a larger screen, especially if you also have a high ppi like the iPhone. You do not lose definition. You also will not have the attendant problems with a larger screen: cost, power requirement, CPU power needs, weight issue (solving which you compromise on body material like plastics?) etc etc.
This i cnot comment...moi use to hab perfect eyesight when young...but due to de amount of gaming n computer usage...i develop Hyperopia and Presbyopia shortly after 30...tat was way way way b4 any smart phone appear...i had completely forgotten how it feel to hab perfect eyesight...haizz:(
I think a extra large screen for a phone is only a fad. I don't see it lasting more than another one to two years. Phones will all eventually end up around 4" to 4.5" for a one hand operation. Two-handed tablets with phone capabilities but via earplugs, wired or wireless, will gyrate around 7" to 8" (your traditional organizer size) as a personal device. If you need to show customers for two persons' viewing, 10" to 11" will probably be the common size or you can have a smaller tablet with projection to wall capability, with obvious limitation.
Larger screen work...at least for me and many others...tat was the primary reason y we prefer Andriod phone...which is generally bigger then Apple...we leave the part bout personal reason y we dislike Apple or Andriod out...:p Actually moi still trying to visualise how will de next revolution of mobile device will be...
