Same-sex couples will be able to adopt for the first time in Victoria.

The same-sex adoption bill, which passed the upper house last month with last-minute amendments allowing religious exemption, was debated in the lower house on Wednesday afternoon.

The bill passed unopposed.

The opposition was given a free vote on the bill.

Labor accepted an amended version of the bill, which will give religious agencies the right to refuse adoption to gay couples, despite previously stating that equality was not negotiable.
