A security flaw in some versions of Internet Explorer could let hackers to gain access and take full control of people’s computers.

The flaw, which is being investigated by Microsoft, and which affects Internet Explorer versions 6-11, has already resulted in “limited, targeted attacks”.

Those versions account for 5% of the PC browser market, according to research firm NetMarketShare.

According to cybersecurity software maker FireEye, a sophisticated group of hackers have been exploiting the bug in a campaign dubbed Operation Clandestine Fox.

Microsoft said the attacker tries to convince the user to visit a specially crafted website which is designed to exploit the vulnerability in the browser.

Such is the risk that the US Department of Homeland Security has advised computer users to consider using alternatives to Internet Explorer browser until the company fixes the security flaw as it “could lead to the complete compromise of an affected system”.
