BOTH army and navy chiefs were promoted on Monday, leading the list of 513 officers to move up in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) this year.

Army chief Ravinder Singh, 46, and Navy chief Ng Chee Peng, 41, received their second stars, becoming Major-General and Rear-Admiral (two-star) respectively.

Seven colonels also received their first star as they entered the ranks of the generals.

They will join the top echelons of SAF, which will now have one lieutenant-general, three major-generals and more than 20 brigadier-generals.

Brigadier-General Singh made history in March when he became the first operationally ready national serviceman (NSman) to return to lead the army.

He had retired from the SAF in 2009, the same year he became the Defence Ministry's deputy secretary (technology).

None of our paper Generals can match this retired British General...

He used to be from the fame SAS regiment....His name Sir Peter De La Billiere.
