Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen shared on Facebook that the new Individual Physical Proficiency Test (IPPT) format has resulted in more people doing better.
The new IPPT has been simplified and it involves only 3 stations, push-ups, sit-ups and a 2.4km run. The new format is much easier to train for as it requires less equipment and it is more flexible so that NSmen can play their strengths.
He noted that compared to the previous IPPT format, NSmen were doing more sit-ups and were running faster than before.
Previously, the IPPT contained 5 stations comprised of a 2.4km run, sit-ups, 4x10m shuttle runs, chin-ups and standing broad jump.
Dr Ng said that the fewer stations in the new format also meant that people were willing to put more in per station and because of the flexibility and transferability of points, Nsmen could "max out" in the stations of their strengths.
While Dr Ng noted that more people would be able to pass the new IPPT system, there are not as many achieving Gold.
Here is his full status on the new IPPT system:
SAF commanders briefed me on the results of the new 3-station IPPT trial. Overall, NSmen did better. They did more sit-ups and average times for the 2.4km run were faster. For some, as much as two minutes – a big improvement!
The results show that the new IPPT format motivates NSmen to “max out” for each station to get the most points. This is good because more will likely pass the new IPPT. Did many more get Gold? Not quite. There was some increase but the proportion of Gold was still only in the single digits. The SAF will share more information soon.
