Colonel Nelson Yau, who is in his mid-40s, has asked to retire from the SAF due to 'personal reasons', said the Ministry of Defence on Sunday.

I couldn't find any report that he is a scholar. He is in his mid-40 and is only a col. i.e. he is unlikely to be a scholar. A non-scholar selected to chair NDP organising com. - he is special. Tends to believe that it is unlikely he quit for wrongdoing - especially the publicity given.

Current Chief Armour Officer got his star at 40s also. I think unless you are ear marked for that few top positions in the SAF, it is seldom that you get your star before age 40.

Strike TOTO? If you refers to the normal prize money of $600k, he is striking TOTO every 2 years with his salary. Literally insane to quit over a 2-year salary which many would regard as a windfall.

Maybe he finally saw what a farce the NDP is, or heard the ridiculous demands from the exco members or the creative director (Glen Goei or some other artsy-fartsy fruitcake), so he thought to himself 'fuck this shit, I'm out'. Made up some 'personal reasons' and left.
Quitting while you're ahead = foresight. If so, then he needs to be applauded.
