Singapore & Malaysia Land VTL To Launch On 29 Nov

Update (9.30pm, 18 Nov): According to the Ministry of Trade and Industry, workers from both countries will be one of the priorities for the land VTL.

The Star also reported that only long-term pass holders will be eligible for land travel between the 2 countries, in contrast to earlier media reports.

We’ve updated the article to reflect this.

One thing Singaporeans have sorely missed throughout this pandemic is popping by over to Johor Bahru (JB) for a short getaway.

Last Monday (8 Nov), Singapore announced the long-anticipated opening of the Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) between Changi Airport and Kuala Lumpur International Airport on 29 Nov.

On Thursday (18 Nov), Johor’s chief minister Hasni Mohammad shared the exciting news that the VTL will also be launched for land travel through the Causeway between our 2 countries on the same day.

This will make JB trips across the causeway possible once again.

Launch of Singapore & Malaysia’s land VTL on 29 Nov

On Thursday (18 Nov) afternoon, Malaysia announced that the land VTL with Singapore will launch on 29 Nov, reported 8world News.

According to China Press, Johor chief minister Hasni Mohammad shared the great news during a hotel opening ceremony in Kota Tinggi today.

With the launch of the land VTL, the Causeway and Second Link will also be opened the same day, he said.

Mr Hasni noted that this means access not just for workers who travel across the border but also ordinary folks.

This means that JB foodie and shopping trips may become a thing again for many Singaporeans.

Minister Hasni further said he hoped that the re-opening of the Causeway will go as planned on 29 Nov.

A report by The Star, however, contradicts other reports by noting that only long-term pass holders will be eligible for land border travel when the land VTL opens.

Gan Kim Yong hinted at Causeway reopening “in a few weeks”

At the start of the month, Singapore announced the launch of the VTL between Changi Airport and Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

Earlier this week on 15 Nov, Trade and Industry Minister Gan Kim Yong said that our land border with Malaysia could reopen in a few weeks.

He added that the reopening will be under a “VTL-like arrangement”, reported The Straits Times (ST).

Although Minister Gan did not elaborate on this, he shared that talks with Malaysia were progressing well.

Details to be finalised: MTI

The Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) told The Straits Times (ST) that it hopes to finalise details on the land VTL “soon”.

It did not give a start date.

However, it confirmed that workers from both countries will be one of the priorities when the land borders do reopen.

Hope JB trips will be possible again soon

It has been 1 year and 8 months since Singapore and Malaysia halted travels across the causeway in March 2020.

Being the most affordable and convenient way of travelling between our countries, especially to Johor, the launch of land travel VTL with our neighbours will certainly be welcomed by both sides.

Not only will workers across the borders be reunited with their families, but it also brings back the possibility of our JB food and shopping trips.

Will you travel across the border once the land VTL opens? Let us know in the comments.

Relief for the PHV drivers who can go over there for a quick petrol run. Beware of hungry thieves camping at petrol stations though.

What's the point of all these VTLs if the vaccines don't make any difference and in fact seem to make things worse!

RON 95 = S$ 0.6655 cents per Litre

RON 97 = S$1.00 per Litre

Diesel = S$0.698 cents per Litre

perhaps those goons in charge realised that what you said is the reality. Just too proud and embarrass to admit. since it makes no difference might
as well open the gate.

I agree, what is the point of all this vaccine if you can't travel like before ??

I would glad that the land point opens.
Result has shown that keeping people indoors and isolated does more harm than good economically and emotionally.

The thing about Malaysia is that u need to be fully vaccinated in order to enter shops. Even if the unvaccinated can cheat their way in, they can't even enter shops or unless they cheat their way in to the shops too lah.

According to Malaysia, it is for those who has working long term pass. Not for public. And u have to take PCR test on jb and sg side. Poke until your nose rot. What is the point of travel if they do until like that?

I predict a bit of rush for vacant jb shop lot today.

Also feel sorry for the many MY workers from Johor who had bought SG-KL flight tickets to go home.

I would encourage singkies not to go unless absolutely essential like checking on their houses etc. For just shopping n jalan jalan betterer don't go until things are settled. The borders might just close again

Day trips to JB for whores and supper is currently not allowed. Oppies must be disappointed.

SINGAPORE - Singaporeans should not expect to resume day trips to Johor anytime soon, despite talks on the reopening of land borders with Malaysia gaining steam.

Observers expect that the reopening will be likely available to just long-term pass holders at the start, with time needed to smooth out potential operational issues.

This means that the number of people crossing the checkpoints will be a far cry from what it was before the Covid-19 pandemic, when about 415,000 travellers passed through the Woodlands Causeway and the Tuas Second Link daily.

The observers' comments come after Johor Menteri Besar Hasni Mohammad said on Thursday (Nov 18) that the vaccinated travel lane (VTL) for land borders between Singapore and Johor will start on Nov 29.

He had said the scheme will cover only long-term pass holders, such as those working in Singapore or Johor Baru.

The Ministry of Trade and Industry said in response that it hopes to finalise details of the VTL scheme soon. It added that one of its priorities will be to allow workers to reunite with their families.

Mr Steven Ler, president of the National Association of Travel Agents Singapore (Natas), said he expects the reopening to be done in stages at a controlled pace.

He said the authorities will have to work out how to ease the queues at immigration counters that will come with the need to check extra documents related to Covid-19.

"For example, if the travellers commute by bus, it will be more structured in terms of immigration clearance, and that will help to ease the traffic flows across the borders," added Mr Ler.

He suggested that the land VTL could have a requirement for Covid-19 test results to be valid for 48 hours after entering the other country.

1 x PCR test in Singapore (S$160) before departure + 1 x PCR test in JB (RM280=S$93) upon arrival + 1 x PCR test in Singapore (S$160) upon returning back to Singapore. Total about S$413 and what if they may still insist you to buy a Covid-19 insurance? Also, application must be made in advance as there is a limited quota per day.

Overall, I think it's still not worth it, unless really necessary, especially for compassionate purposes.
