Prince William has warned that the future of wildlife is under threat from rapid population growth, as he prepares to welcome his third child.

The Duke of Cambridge, 35, made the comments at the Tusk gala dinner in London on Thursday night, saying: 'In my lifetime, we have seen global wildlife populations decline by over half.

'We are going to have to work much harder and think much deeper, if we are to ensure that human beings and the other species of animal with which we share this planet can continue to co-exist.

'Africa's rapidly growing human population is predicted to more than double by 2050, a staggering increase of three and a half million people per month.

'There is no question that this increase puts wildlife and habitat under enormous pressure. Urbanisation, infrastructure development, cultivation—all good things in themselves, but they will have a terrible impact unless we begin to plan and to take measures now.'

William's father Prince Charles previously spoke out about his concerns over population growth in a 2010 speech at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, warning that the world faces 'monumental' problems as populations rocket.

Earlier this year an environmental organisation based in San Francisco wrote an open letter to the Cambridges urging them to 'lead by example' by not having any more children

He cautioned that earth doesn't have the capacity to 'sustain us all', while a 'vast proportion' is consuming natural resources at 'Western levels'.

'It would certainly help if the acceleration slowed down, but it would also help if the world reduced its desire to consume,' he said.

In 2008, in an interview for a documentary with Sir Trevor McDonald, the Duke of Edinburgh also issued a warning about overpopulation.

The food prices are going up – everyone thinks it's to do with not enough food, but it's really that demand is too great, too many people."

The Duke adds: "It's a little embarrassing for everybody, no one quite knows how to handle it. Nobody wants their family life to be interfered with by the government."

William is set to become a father-of-three when Kate gives birth in April 2018, but before the news was announced a San Francisco based organisation called on the couple to 'lead by example' and stop at two children for environmental reasons.

Having Kids, which promotes smaller families, wrote an open letter to the royal couple in July urging them to 'consider forgoing having a third child (...) in favour of modelling a smaller, sustainable family.'

The organisation spoke out after Kate joked about having more children when presented with a baby gift during the royal tour of Poland.

Having Kids executive director Anne Green said: 'William and Kate have a tremendous opportunity to model their choice of having a smaller family.

'By doing so, they set an example as to what has the most potential for mitigating climate change and its impacts, including severe flooding, deadlier heatwaves, increase in diseases, and wildlife extinctions.'

She added: 'Moreover, given the vast economic inequalities in the world today, the couple also has the opportunity to model a simple principle: That every child deserves as fair start in life'.

Prince William spoke out against overpopulation in Africa and across the world at a wildlife conservation charity gala on Thursday.

The 35-year-old father of two — who is expecting his third child with Kate Middleton — said that urbanization and infrastructure development could have a “terrible impact” on wildlife “unless we begin to plan and to take measures now.”

“Africa’s rapidly growing human population is predicted to more than double by 2050 — a staggering increase of three and a half million people per month,” he told the crowd at the Tusk at The Roundhouse gala in London.

“There is no question that this increase puts wildlife and habitat under enormous pressure.”

William’s statements echo that made by his grandfather, Prince Philip, in 2016.

“The human population of the world is growing and is occupying more space, and it has got to be accommodated somehow or other,” Philip said.

William spoke of the importance of protecting wild animals like rhinos and other species’ facing dangerous conditions.

“We are going to have to work much harder to ensure that human beings and other species can co-exist,” he said, according to gala organizers.

The Tusk Trust, which aims to protect wildlife in Africa – especially elephants, was one of the first causes adopted by William when he started his public life and he has remained passionate about the cause.

Prince William, whose wife is expecting their third child, has sent out a bleak warning that an overpopulated planet threatens animal species. His comments come as experts predict Britain’s population will swell to 70 million by 2029.
Speaking at a gala event in London, the Duke of Cambridge said a rapidly increasing population is putting “enormous pressure” on animal species. As royal patron of the Tusk Trust, he told the dinner on Thursday night that there is an urgent need for a strategy that will allow humans and animal species to share the environment.

“In my lifetime, we have seen global wildlife populations decline by over half,” he said. “We are going to have to work much harder, and think much deeper, if we are to ensure that human beings and the other species of animal with which we share this planet can continue to co-exist.

He added that overgrazing and poor water supplies will have a “catastrophic effect” on animal species if new measures to tackle the challenge fail to be implemented. His calls echoed those of his grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh, who in 2011 suggested a policy of “voluntary family limitation” to tackle overpopulation, which he billed as the biggest challenge in conservation.

Prince William also took the chance to speak out against the disastrous effects of illegal animal trade on both wildlife and people. “It is barbaric, it destroys livelihoods and communities, and it supports organized crime,” he said. “The world is a worse place for it, and we must stamp it out.”

What they are saying they want to stop China from developing Aftrican countries into modern cities NY.

Then Aftricans got money can armed themselves w NK nukes and Chinese gunboats and targeting UK soil.

If there is more than enough food and water, then we are not overpopulated or headed towards overpopulation. Period.

If your need is only just food and water then you may survive - but you are not a bacterial so your need much more than food and water, and you will NOT Survive unless you have a huge lot more.

It is known that some bacterial can survive after men extinct and environment became very harsh e.g. post nuke WW3.

Ancient man e.g. caveman Flintstones can survive with much lesser resources than us living in simple natural ways of life. Today's human babies can not survive being born in an advanced and sophisticated hospital, they mom's neh neh have no milk for them and they only grow up if there were baby formula supplies. WITHOUT A HUGE COMPLEX HORDE of RESOURCES taken from Planet Earth in Tremendously Ruining Means, MAN WILL EXTINCT. And most smartly, men's own consumption is exhausting destroying the entire source of their own needs - fuck whole planet up and dream to flee to NOWHERE PLANET.

Man can go kiss dog's ass because dogs are way less stupid, at least not doing a mass act of total extinction suicide like man.

the problem is NOT too many human
but too many selfish and evil human beings
the world is still big enough to sustain more trillions and billions
just that evil human beings are exploiting each other
and killing each other for their own selfish reasons
the earth is a good earth
but the inhabitants are evil, vile and selfish
it's not about over population
its about the evil of man - we must control this

Here's pic of a common cuisine for sinkies. We have more than just mere food and water, aka bread/rice and mineral water. No overpopulation.

Effects of nukes are also overstated. Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bombed with nukes. The two cities today are still populated instead of being abandoned. Fukushima had a major radiation leak. Only its immediate vicinity were evacuated. Life goes on as normal in the neighbouring districts and in the nearby big cities. Besides, thanks to nukes, we don't have any more major wars today, just lots of little ones in the non-nukes countries.

that is a very prescient warning.

Nature knows that, hence why the non-human species have conspired to have jong un and trump on separate continents.

failing that, drug resistant bacteria awaits.

If he is so concerned about over population, why the hell is he expecting his 3rd child? He can start off helping the world by killing himself first.

I guess the elites have different perspective on their own kind regarding the concern about over population.

Coexistence idea is a mass suicide for total extinction by man. Caused Over-Population over-consumption and Exhaustion of global resources plus ruining of global environmental qualities.
Man just Wrongly Presumed endless supplies of global resources, and pretend that they did not caused global destruction, and continue the most deadly mistake of modern civilization.
The strongest should ELIMINATE the weakest all the time instead of protesting them and dream Coexistence.
Thus survival only for the fittest. This is the only natural rule that kept VITAL BALANCE of globe and resources.
Man contradicted this rule about after WW2, exploded population level to 8 billions and ruined entire globe. Which was perfectly balanced for millions n billions of years, without stupid Humanity and Peace and Coexistence mistakes.
Now top scientist Hopkins warned that man will extinct on earth unless fled to some other planet within 100 years.
We lived correctly with correct Elimination and Balance for million years since stone age. Why allow a total destruction and extinction by a bunch of foolish ideas within 100 years?
If universe had alternate habitats they are not meant for stupid idea to ruin one after another, Humanity and Peace and Coexistence idea is a pest and virus to ruin whole universe if man ruin elsewhere after earth!
