PETALING JAYA, Malaysia - Four notorious criminals, including a rogue policeman, have been stopped in their tracks following a month-long investigation.

The gang, which was led by a 53-year-old mastermind with 14 criminal records for violent crime, were nabbed by authorities in a raid at a coffee shop in Taman Samudera, Batu Caves on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old policeman went rogue after he stopped showing up at his post in IPD Gombak about a year ago. The other two men are aged 27 and 33.

During the raid, police confiscated two long parang and a keris found in two cars belonging to them. They are now being held for questioning at the Gombak district police headquarters.

Gombak OCPD Assistant Commissioner of Police Abdul Rahim Abdullah said the men were suspected to have been involved in several gang robberies in the area over the past two months, including a robbery of RM150,000 (S$60,192) at a computer shop in a hypermarket in Bandar Selayang on May 9.

"They have committed many armed robberies and have injured people in some cases. They are also suspects in some cases of attempted rioting.

"A team apprehended the four men, including six others, while they were having tea," he said, adding that the six people who were apprehended were released shortly after.

Of the four, ACP Abdul Rahim said, only the mastermind, who is known as Mat Belacan in the underworld, had a previous criminal record.
