When three Indian businessmen opened the door of their second-floor shop in Little India yesterday, they were greeted by three men dressed in the blue of the Singapore Police Force.

But instead of being protected by these "cops", they were relieved of over $100,000 by the brazen police impersonators.

The Straits Times understands that it is very rare here for a crime to be committed by someone masquerading as a policeman.

The robbery occurred around 8.15am at 103, Dunlop Street in Little India.

5 arrested for Dunlop Street gang robbery charged in court

SINGAPORE: The five men arrested on Wednesday for alleged gang robbery at Dunlop Street have been charged in court.

Mohamed Faizal Ajmalhan, 29, Magesan Ramasamy, 33, Mohammad Ansari Abdul Hussain, 34, Arunachalam Lakshmanan, 35 and Chinnaya Antony Samy, 35, are each accused of robbing S$300,000 from Mr Antony Savarimuthu on Monday.

If convicted of gang robbery, the men face a jail term of five to 20 years and at least 12 strokes of the cane each.

The police issued a statement on Thursday, saying the five men had robbed more than S$1 million from three foreign businessmen at about 8.45am at a second-floor shophouse unit along Dunlop Street.

Three of the five men had pretended to be police officers.

The three impersonators accused the Indian businessmen of conducting illegal activities and tied them up before they made off with their money.

Two days later, the five suspects were arrested and cash of about S$842,000 was recovered.

If convicted of impersonation of a police officer, the maximum penalty is a jail term of up to two years and a fine.

On Monday morning, as most people were rushing for work just before 8.45am, three men in police uniform entered a second-floor shophouse unit in Little India.

The trio, impersonating as police officers, told three foreign Indian businessmen in the Dunlop Street shophouse that they wanted to check on them on allegations of illegal activity.

In the next moments, the businessmen were forcibly tied up, and the three police impersonators made off with more than S$1 million, fleeing in a getaway car.

The real policemen then had to get into action, arresting five suspects on 12 September after a 48-hour operation.

The suspects, aged between 29 and 34, were charged in court today for gang robbery and personating as a public servant. Police said that two of them are foreign workers, while the other three are Singaporeans, Channel NewsAsia reported.

Mohamed Faizal Ajmalhan, 29, Magesan Ramasamy, 33, Mohammad Ansari Abdul Hussain, 34, Arunachalam Lakshmanan, 35 and Chinnaya Antony Samy, 35, are each accused of robbing S$300,000 from Mr Antony Savarimuthu.

Yesterday, the police had issued a press release stating that cash amounting to $842,400 was recovered from the suspects, and the getaway car that was used in the robbery was also recovered and seized.

Anyone convicted for gang robbery faces a jail term of between five and 20 years, and at least 12 strokes of the cane. If convicted for personating as a public servant, one could be jailed up to two years, or fined, or both.

Police are reminding the public that they should ask to see the police officer’s warrant card to verify his identity before complying with the instructions of the officer. A genuine warrant card will have identification features such as the police crest, the photo of the officer, his name and NRIC number.

Men involved in million-dollar Dunlop Street robbery face more charges

SINGAPORE: The five men accused of committing a million-dollar gang robbery in Dunlop Street on 10 September now face additional charges.

Last week, the five men were charged with robbing Indian national businessman Antony Savarimuthu of S$300,000 at a shophouse in Dunlop Street on 10 September.

All five are now accused of robbing S$900,000 from Mr Gulam Hussain Jalaludeen and another S$70,000 from Mr Abuasanar Kamarulzaman on the same day.

Besides the two fresh charges, Mohamed Faizal Ajmalhan, 29, taxi driver Mohammad Ansari Abdul Hussain, 33, and music teacher Magesan Ramasamy, 33, each faces five more charges.

In all, the three Singaporeans face seven new charges.

They are accused of impersonating as police officers on three counts, in the September 10 gang robbery.

They are also accused of attempted robbery with a pocket knife in April this year and another attempted robbery on September 5 this year, on other victims.

Meanwhile, the remaining two men - Arunachalam Lakshmanan, 34, and Chinnaya Antony Samy, 35 - each faces one fresh charge of attempted robbery on September 5 this year.

This case will be mentioned again on 28 September.
