GEORGE TOWN: A security guard was caught napping in a RM20,000 heist by an armed robber at a bank branch in a hypermarket here.
The guard, who was on duty with a pump gun inside the bank’s premises, told police he was unaware of the robbery which took less than a minute.
Police, however, found his story “too good to be true” and have detained him to facilitate investigation.
Also detained was the only other guard on his first day of work who was stationed outside the bank premises.
The robber, who wore a cap and face mask and was armed with two parang, held this guard at knife point. He led the guard to one of the bank counters where he ordered a staff member to hand over cash.
At one point, the robber slammed one of his parang on the counter out of frustration which gave those inside the premises a fright.
It is learnt he fled the scene in a motorcycle parked nearby.
Penang CID chief Senior Asst Comm Mazlan Kesah said there were six customers and five bank employees in the premises when the robbery took place at 11.45am yesterday.
He said no one was injured, adding that the two guards detained are in their 20s and 40s.
“The robber is 173cm tall, has fair complexion and speaks not fluent Malay,” SAC Mazlan told reporters at the scene.
