I was having my brunch at Ghim Moh market. Ordered my food and sat down. there was a little gal who is the hawker's daughter at the same table.

Next table, there were a family - parents and 2 little gals. The 2 gals were playing and spoke in well mannered English. Presumably they were from the upper class from the private estate around Ghim Moh market.

The hawkers' daughter was enviously staring at the 2 elite little gals. You could see the jealous eyes and if one could read from those eyes, you can see the words Hatred, Bitch and so on.

The income gap has indeed widen even amongst little kids....:(

She was envious not because they were "elite" but because they had their own table, whereas she had to share her table with an orang utan. :o

Rich and poor has long been in singapore and come on hawkers have long existed in sg since the beginning. Speaking english has also long existed in sg. My grandfather can speak english. The more curious thing would be were the 2 girls more pretty and graceful compared to the hawker's daughter?

Back in the older days the language usage gap was bigger that is if you spoke english the chances are you were educated and so on and richer if you spoke hokkien chances are you were a hokkien peng you spoke in hokkien most of the time and honestly speaking most hokkien peng were and are uneducated, vulgar, crude etc the only difference was if you were a tow kay who were rich but still behaved in a rude and crude manner and it's rather curious why did it seem that hokkien speakers were the only ones that were stereotyped in such a manner after all there are lowly educated and crude english speakers, mandarin and other language speakers. Even in the army platoons who are grouped via education level and those with the most minimal of education are called hokkien peng platoons.

This type of gap is slowly closing cos fewer and fewer sinkies can speak dialects but i suppose the hawkers still mostly speak them.

it's kind of sad that you can be stereotyped as crude or classy based on the language u speak and there are high class mandarin/hokkien speakers around but by and large they are severely outnumbered by rude, cruded uneducated gangsterish hokkien pengs. You see how you instantly assumed the family to be upper class and from the rich housing estate simply cos the girls spoke in well mannered english while i suppose the hawker's daughter would be scolding knnbccb and all that.

What makes u so sure hawkers are poor? i have seen hawkers own BMWs and Mercs and live in private property, they are in a cash business and their biz is practically recession proof,,,they might not act atas and high crass like pappies, but in terms of wealth they are even better off than many PMETS.

There are a lot of rich hawkers around but the problem is that their appearance and behavior probably isn't different from a uneducated and poor hokkien peng on the streets.


The crux in TS story wasn't about actual wealth after all there wasn't any indication of the wealth of the hawker and the daughter or the family of 4. TS only played on a stereotype and the assumption that all cos the daughters of the family of 4 spoke in well mannered english they were assumed to be rich and even more curious is that why would the hawker's daughter feel jealous? Is it cos they were somehow more elegant or chio compared to her? Why do you think that ppl who grew up in english speaking families somehow appear to be more elegant and well mannered compared to those brought up in hokkien families?

Ghim Moh market have a good nasi lemak stall.... I love it!!! Always long queue n close before 12 noon... Business damn good
