Retired SAF major shot dead in Philippines over money lending dispute

VIGAN CITY, Philippines - A retired Singaporean army major was shot dead on Sunday in this northern Philippine city.

Cyrill Thankam Gomes, 67, was shot in the head by a still unidentified assailant while he was buying goods at the New Born Lumber and Hardware store in barangay 1, Vigan City, Ilocos Sur.

Gomes was immediately brought to the Metro Vigan Cooperative Hospital, but was declared dead on arrival.

A caliber 45 gun was used in the killing of the Singaporean.

The police are continuing its probe into the incident, but the initial results of the investigation indicate that the killing may be related to the victim's money lending business.

Gomes had been living in barangay San Julian Sur, Vigan City for the past three years with his Filipino wife
