Who says we are heading towards recession? The women are still going all out to buy their cosmetics & branded!

Singapore retail sales up for fifth month

Singapore's retail sales rose for a fifth month in July as consumers increased purchases of automobiles and clothing, an advance that may ease as the global recovery weakens and hurts sentiment.

The retail sales index rose 10.7 per cent from a year earlier after climbing a revised 11.1 per cent in June, the Statistics Department said yesterday

Adjusted for seasonal factors, overall retail sales rose 2.1 per cent in July from June, when they rose a revised 1.7 per cent. The index measuring purchases excluding automobiles rose 10.7 per cent from a year earlier, after climbing a revised 10.7 per cent in June. Vehicle sales rose 4.8 per cent monthly.

The economy added 24,800 jobs last quarter, more than an earlier estimate of 22,800, the Ministry of Manpower said yesterday.

they can anyhow bullshit figures......................just like China

End of the day, they just wanna squeeze all the small time retail suckers out of the mkt, eg, tio stop order... This is what the papers are doing.....

If there is poor local demand, I don't see how many of the retail outlets can be doing well

This year I notice that the neighbourhood mall seems more empty on weekends. Have seen shops & restaurant in this mall close. With the latest rounds of price hikes I won't be surprised if business gets worse.

Sales go up doesn't mean profits are up too. It just means more money spent by peasants buying either cheap stuff in bulk (non profit stuff for retailers) Borders closing sale is a good example. Or buying inflated stuff like cars and pigeonholes

If more retailers going bust in future and having closing down sale, the index would go up still. Also more FTs being imported, index would definitely go up. No big deal.

Clothing sales go up can be because of upscaling, higher prices or tourist dollar$
Auto sales up of course is related to COE.
