Ethnic Communities Council former president Suresh Rajan has called for urgent action to educate and mentor taxi drivers after a series of sexual attacks on women by cabbies from the Indian sub-continent.

Last week, four taxi drivers - three of them believed to be of Indian descent - were charged with sexual assault of passengers.

Mr Rajan said he was worried about the number of complaints against Indian students who worked part-time as taxi drivers and believed cultural differences and sexual repression in Indian society played a big role in motivating sexual attacks on women in WA.

He said training given to taxi drivers on appropriate behaviour towards female passengers "obviously wasn't working". Better training and mentorship could "change attitudes" and reduce inappropriate behaviour, he said.

"I have been concerned that I am stereotyping, but given the number of incidents that have occurred (with Indian students) if we don't nip this in the bud, it is going to get worse," he said.

"What the bad apples are doing is destroying the reputation of the Indian community that has been built up over years of migration to this country.

"It is incumbent on someone like me to say 'let's not stereotype everyone, but let's talk about this group of people that are offending, understand why they are offending and address the issue as to how we can stop this'.

"Training can change attitudes and these boys will listen to someone such as myself who has been living here for 30 years."
