SINGAPORE - Former Member of Parliament Choo Wee Khiang was charged this morning with three counts of corruption, allegedly committed while he was president of the Singapore Table Tennis Association.
The former Jalan Besar GRC MP, who resigned from Parliament under a cloud in 1999, is accused of receiving S$1,500 in 2005 from a then-national player in exchange for more playing opportunities.
He is also said to have received US$600 on two occasions between 2003 and 2004 from a then-STTA assistant coach as reward for approving the use of two training facilities in China.
Another former colleague of Mr Choo's, Mdm Koh Li Ping, was also charged with one count of conspiring with him to commit criminal breach of trust between 2002 and 2003.
Mdm Koh, who was then a manager with STTA, allegedly arranged with the principal of a local secondary school to engage the STTA in a new training arrangement.
She then got the approval from Mr Choo to use S$8,400 of the proceeds to pay a colleague who did not provide any training in the arrangement.
Their cases were adjourned.
