Religion of hate and revenge: Turkey’s Erdogan files criminal complaint against Geert Wilders for insulting him

ogan has long been antagonizing the EU, and has referred to it as “sick” and “collapsing.” Recently, we have seen his furious defense of Islam in France in the wake of the beheading of teacher Samuel Paty for showing a cartoon of Muhammad. His latest target is Dutch politician Geert Wilders, who is well known for his stance against Islamization and for his own Muhammad cartoon contest. Erdogan has “filed a criminal complaint with Turkish authorities” against Wilders, “saying that he had insulted him on social media.” Wilders called Erdogan a “terrorist” and “posted an image of a sinking ship with a Turkish flag on it. ‘Bye bye @RTErdogan. Kick Turkey out of NATO,’ he said under the image.”

Turkey should indeed be kicked out of NATO. Given the fact that its values are diametrically opposed to those of other NATO members, its presence in NATO poses a threat.

Lawyers and Turkish authorities representing Erdogan “said the comments by Wilders could not be viewed as freedom expression and that Wilders had targeted Erdogan’s ‘honour, dignity, character and reputation.’”

There is no “honour, dignity” or “character” present in Erdogan. And his “reputation” precedes him as a dangerous despot in his zealous defense of Islam at any cost, as he ruthlessly expands his own power regionally and attempts to do the same globally. But what is most ominous about this is the attempt here again to restrict the freedom of expression to speech that the powerful consider to be acceptable.

Erdogan is fast becoming the Sunni counterpart to the Islamic Republic of Iran as he serves as a global watchdog, avid to shield both himself and Islam from any insult.

“Devlet Bahceli, leader of Turkey’s Nationalist Movement Party and an ally of Erdogan, said on Tuesday that Wilders had ‘dark ties’ with terrorist organisations.” This while Erdogan is aiding and preparing Syrian jihadists, possibly to attack Greece.

As far as Erdogan and his cohorts are concerned, anyone who does not support the vision of his jihadist regime is a “terrorist.”

“Erdogan files criminal complaint against Dutch politician Wilders,” Reuters, October 27, 2020:

ANKARA (Reuters) – Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has filed a criminal complaint with Turkish authorities against Dutch far-right leader Geert Wilders saying that he had insulted him on social media, state-owned Anadolu news agency said on Tuesday.

Wilders is one of Europe’s most prominent far-rightists and has been a key figure in shaping the immigration debate in the Netherlands over the past decade, although he has never been in government.

On Saturday Wilders posted a cartoon picture of Erdogan and captioned it “terrorist”. On Monday he posted an image of a sinking ship with a Turkish flag on it. “Bye bye @RTErdogan. Kick Turkey out of NATO,” he said under the image.

Erdogan’s lawyers filed a lawsuit with prosecutors in Ankara on Tuesday, saying Turkish courts had jurisdiction on the matter because the insults were directed at Turkey’s president, Anadolu reported, citing the document filed by the lawyers.

“Even though the crime was committed directly against the person in the presidential seat, the value that is being violated is the state’s political government structure,” the lawyers said, according to Anadolu.

They said the comments by Wilders could not be viewed as freedom expression and that Wilders had targeted Erdogan’s “honour, dignity, character and reputation”.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said the lawsuit as unacceptable.

“I have a message for President Erdogan and the message is very simple. In the Netherlands, we consider freedom of speech one of our most cherished rights and that includes cartoons, including of politicians.”

Ankara has long been critical of the views and policies put forth by Wilders, leader of the Freedom Party. Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu on Sunday called him a “loser racist” trying to gain support with animosity towards Islam and foreigners.

“It is time for Europe to stop its spoiled, fascist-minded politicians,” Cavusoglu said on Twitter.

Devlet Bahceli, leader of Turkey’s Nationalist Movement Party and an ally of Erdogan, said on Tuesday that Wilders had “dark ties” with terrorist organisations….

The Turkish speaking people are widely spread from European turkey, Bulgaria all the way to xinjiang in china. An area bigger than western Europe. They were allies to the mongols.
