In the beginning, i was also thinking the bestest is to use Soviet/Russian equipment. Performance was suppose to be better than USA stuff (like jets). However the Russian stuff endurance and reliability is abit on the low side. The planes flying time is less than USA ones. And their avionics and electronics are not as good as the USA..
On top of that, most important is compatibility. Like missiles attach to aircraft. USA missiles dont think can be installed on Russian MIGS. etc
Since Singapore already uses majority western weapons, its pointless to change one weapon system that is not compatible with the rest of your arsenal.
For China stuff,,,I doubt they are reliable. This helicopter might be good now, but will probably have half the endurance to USA platforms. also dont think compatible with USA missiles and avionics etc..The helicopter will probably crash in a few years.
However I do concur, that Singapore can easily get more bang for the buck with its defense budget. but dont forget ST (Singapore Technologies) has its fingers in the defense budget and they are just using it to design and create crap.
Look at the new rifle SAR21. would anyone call it a success? We should have just use the M16A4. They use the same 5.56mm ammo. Dont have to redesign the wheel just to feed the assholes in ST and senior generals.
And USA arms exports have been growing alot. So many of its allies are buying USA arms etc,,surely not all USA stuff is crap right?
ok 1 thing that is crap is the JSF,,should just get rid of it and stick to the F15 silent eagle, cheaper and compatible with the existing F15 fleet.
Or the SAF can stick to the F16..a capable dog fighter and bomber. I mean do we need a real air superiority fighter now? Which one of our surrounding neighbours have an air superiority fighter better than the F16? even if have, I doubt they will have that many to threaten the RSAF.
If a war breaks out, we need a capable platform to destroy enemy airbases and defences,,a capable bomber is needed. Not an air superiority fighter.
Also drones are getting more and more popular with the USA due to the cheaper costs and greater flexibility.
This is an example of buying stuff we dont need and not being cost effective and practical.
Also look at singapore having the leopard 2 tanks. I think they are the best tank in the world...however do we need it? tanks are actually becoming obsolete as they are easy targets for drones with antitank missiles etc. If not how come there have been no new tank developed for the past 20 years? the Leopard 2 and M1 Abrams 2 tank are nearly 20 years old. Nowadays even the USA is starting to concentrate on assault vehicles like the Striker. It can be configured for anti tank role or apc role etc.
All these spending on expensive impractical toys for the sake of enriching the few is just making life harder for the singaporean people. just my rants..
On reform for SAF I agree in the part of changing our source of weapon to cheaper but equal effective weapons. LIke you see this helicopter so beautiful and so maneuverable surely can do what Apache can do but cost a fraction I guess, why not buy more of this?
