Redknapp sacked! Spurs reign over as Moyes and Martinez are lined up

By MATT LAWTON and SAMI MOKBEL PUBLISHED: 22:10 GMT, 13 June 2012 | UPDATED: 07:18 GMT, 14 June 2012

Harry Redknapp's reign at Tottenham is over after the club announced his three-and-a-half-year tenure at White Hart Lane has come to an end. Everton's David Moyes and Roberto Martinez of Wigan are strong contenders to take over after Spurs decided not to offer Redknapp a new contract.

The tactic was designed to force out the 65-year-old, but Redknapp stood his ground during talks with chairman Daniel Levy on Wednesday, refusing to resign despite the club’s tough stance.
Levy said: 'This is not a decision the board and I have taken lightly. Harry arrived at the club at a time when his experience and approach was exactly what was needed.

Game over: Redknapp has been sacked

'This decision in no way detracts from the excellent work Harry has done during his time with the club and I should like to thank him for his achievements and contribution.

'Harry will always be welcome at the Lane.'Redknapp added: 'I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Spurs and am proud of my achievements.

'I have had a fantastic four years with the club, at times the football has been breathtaking.

'I am sad to be leaving but wish to thank the players, staff and fans for their terrific support during my time there.'

In contention: Moyes (left) and Martinez (right) are favourites for the job

The focus has switched to a severance package for the final 12 months of Redknapp’s £3million-a-year contract.

Levy has now set his sights on a successor. Moyes and Martinez top the list, while Frank de Boer of Ajax has also been linked with the job. Former Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas is in the running, although as an outsider.

Moyes has established an enviable reputation during his 10 years at Goodison Park. The Scot, who is due to return from holiday on Thursday and plans to take in some games at Euro 2012, would be tempted by the opportunity to manage a club with genuine Champions League credentials.

Martinez's stock has soared after securing Swansea City’s promotion to the Championship in 2008 before leaving in 2009 for Wigan, where he orchestrated an incredible escape from relegation last season.

Strained: Redknapp's relationship with chairman Daniel Levy was at breaking point

He was a frontrunner to take over at Liverpool last month but eventually lost out to Brendan Rodgers. Redknapp has overseen a revival at Tottenham but there appears to have been a serious breakdown in his dealings with Levy.

Theirs was never an easy relationship but the chairman did at least recognise the job Redknapp had done in rejuvenating a club that was in danger of relegation when he took charge. He not only guided them into the Champions League for the first time but also built one of the most entertaining teams in England.

A poor run of results cost Tottenham third place and with it Champions League football. There was further friction when Redknapp publicly asked for a new contract and it appears Levy’s refusal was the breaking point.

Modric to join Redknapp heading out the Tottenham exit? Corluka backs team-mate to leave

By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER PUBLISHED: 05:37 GMT, 14 June 2012 | UPDATED: 05:40 GMT, 14 June 2012

Vedran Corluka does not expect playmaker Luka Modric to stay at Tottenham next season.

The defender, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Bayer Leverkusen from the White Hart Lane club, believes Spurs' failure to secure Champions League football will force his Croatia team-mate to look elsewhere. And there is further uncertainty now that manager Harry Redknapp's exit has been confirmed by the club.

On the move? Corluka (centre) is backing Modric to leave White Hart Lane

'We all know it will be very difficult for Spurs to keep Luka because they do not have Champions League football next season,' he said in The Sun.

'Luka is one of the best players in the world and the kind who wants to play in the best competition.

'Not getting into the Champions League will cost Spurs next season, even though they were unlucky to get fourth place and still not be there.'

Redknapp: Spurs would have booted me out even if we had reached Champions League

By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER PUBLISHED: 09:27 GMT, 14 June 2012 | UPDATED: 15:45 GMT, 14 June 2012

Harry Redknapp insists Tottenham would still have shown him the door even if he had managed to steer the north London club into the Champions League.

The 65-year-old, who has vowed to take another job after being sacked by Spurs on Wednesday night, says his future at the club has already been decided.

Tottenham finished fourth but were foiled in the European ambitions by Chelsea's stunning defeat of Bayern Munich in the 2011-12 final.

Kicked out: Harry Redknapp speaking on Thursday morning after his 3.30am sacking by Tottenham

'We finished fourth and were unlucky at the end, but I think the same outcome would have happened,' Redknapp told BBC Radio Five Live.'Even if we had finished fourth, the chairman would have gone down the same road. But that is football.'I had four great years at Spurs. All you can do is leave the club in a better state than you found it and I did that, for sure.''I had four great years at Spurs. All you can do is leave the club in a better state than you found it and I did that, for sure.'I abide by their decision and don't hold grudges. That is life, we all move on.'

Redknapp is determined to secure a new managerial position, despite the sacking. 'I feel great, I am ready. Football keeps me going, that is what I will miss. But I am not one for sitting at home,' Redknapp explained. 'I'm not coming to the end, I feel fit as a fiddle. I would suit any job. It is just what happens in football. Who knows?'

Where a new role would emerge remains to be seen. The only vacant post in the Premier League right now is at Swansea and it is unlikely Redknapp would be tempted by the role.Should David Moyes be offered the Tottenham job, Redknapp may emerge as a contender for a unique swap. However, he may feel it is the right time to take a lucrative post abroad - particularly in the Middle East. The are a number of rich sides in the United Arab Emirates and Qatar that would be interested in offering Redknapp a job.

Crushed: Tottenham were destroyed by Chelsea at Wembley in the FA Cup semi-final

Redknapp explained his sacking was not finance related, instead it was based on the club's desire for a change.'It was nothing to do with contracts or me asking for anything at all. I had a year left and that was fine,' he said.'It was just a case that the club decided they wanted a change and that is their decision because they own the club.'He added: 'I kept my counsel about that all through. It had no effect, it was just a decision the chairman decided he wanted to make. That is their right to do that.'

On his departure from White Hart Lane, Redknapp said: ‘I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Spurs and am proud of my achievements. ‘I have had a fantastic four years with the club, at times the football has been breathtaking.

Revolving door: Who's next in for White Hart Lane?

‘I am sad to be leaving but wish to thank the players, staff and fans for their terrific support during my time there.’Redknapp was pleased to leave the fans with some happy memories from his tenure, even if he did not pick up any silverware.

'People who support Tottenham had lots to smile about, they were proud and that was important to me. I will never forget the fans,' insisted the sacked manager.'I leave behind some fantastic players. The only disappointment I have is that I think it was a team which could have gone on and eventually won the Premier League in the next year or two.'I just wish I could have been able to see that through and be part of that because they have some fantastic players there.'

Chairman Daniel Levy said: ‘This is not a decision the board and I have taken lightly. Harry arrived at the club at a time when his experience and approach was exactly what was needed.‘This decision in no way detracts from the excellent work Harry has done during his time with the club and I should like to thank him for his achievements and contribution. Harry will always be welcome at the Lane.’

Villas-Boas to be named new Tottenham manager on Monday

The Portuguese is expected to sign a three-year contact and will make Icelandic midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson his first signing at White Hart Lane

By Wayne Veysey | Chief Correspondent

Andre Villas-Boas is set to be appointed the new Tottenham manager on Monday.

Sources have told Goalcom that the Portuguese has accepted Spurs' job offer and the final paperwork on a three-year contract will be completed over the weekend.

Barring any last-minute hitches, Tottenham are hoping to name Villas-Boas as Harry Redknapp's successor after Sunday's Euro 2012 final between Italy and Spain.

The former Chelsea manager agreed to take over at White Hart Lane earlier this week, but official confirmation has been delayed until after July 1 due to contractual and legal reasons.

Villas-Boas was initially Spurs' second choice behind France coach Laurent Blanc, but impressed chairman Daniel Levy with his vision for the future of the club during a series of talks throughout the second half of June.

The 34-year-old is already actively engaged in the club's summer transfer plans and has approved proposed moves for Gylfi Sigurdsson and Jan Vertonghen as he looks to get Spurs back into the Champions League.

Sigurdsson will be confirmed as Villas-Boas' first signing at White Hart Lane as early as Monday after he passed a medical and agreed personal terms with the north London club.

Spurs have agreed an £8 million fee with Hoffenheim to steal the 22-year-old from under the noses of Liverpool after he snubbed the opportunity to re-join Brendan Rodgers.

The new Liverpool manager wanted to take the midfielder with him from Swansea City, where he spent the second half of last season on loan.

Sigurdsson will be working with an even younger coach than Rodgers after Villas-Boas convinced Levy that he has not been scarred by a dismal eight months in charge of Chelsea.

After sacking Redknapp, the Spurs supremo prioritised a young, dynamic coach who can make full use of the club's new Enfield training ground and continue to overhaul a squad that is expected to soon be deprived of Luka Modric, who is edging closer to a move to Real Madrid.

Tottenham to hand incoming Andre Villas-Boas £70m war chest

The Portuguese will be tasked with returning Spurs to the Champions League when he is unveiled as the new man in charge at White Hart Lane as Harry Redknapp's replacement

Jul 2, 2012 8:25:00 AM

EXCLUSIVE
By Greg Stobart

Andre Villas-Boas will be given £70 million to spend to get Tottenham back into the Champions League when he is named as the club’s new manager.

The Portuguese is expected to beofficially announced as Harry Redknapp’s replacement on a three-year deal on Monday after impressing chairman Daniel Levy with his vision for the Londoners and fighting off competition from Laurent Blanc.

Villas-Boas will handed a massive war chest to meet his target of getting Spurs back into Europe's premier competition and has already been involved in the club’s moves in the summer transfer market.

The 34-year-old, who was sacked by Chelsea in March, has approved an £8m deal for Hoffenheim midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson which will be confirmed in the next 24 hours while Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen is set to follow shortly in a £9.6m switch.

Spurs are expected to sell midfielder Luka Modric this summer, with Real Madrid leading the race to sign the £35m-rated Croatian - but Villas-Boas has been assured he will be able to reinvest the money to improve the squad.

He wants to sign at least two strikers, a creative midfielder to replace Modric and a goalkeeper who can become Tottenham’s long-term No.1, with 41-year-old Brad Friedel set to retire at the end of coming season.

162964942c7abfe8b99872575632828cf859b08e.jpg

Villas-Boas has been assured he will be given financial backing and is happy with the club’s plans to have a specialised transfer committee that will include Tim Sherwood, who is highly-rated at White Hart Lane and will be promoted from his existing role as technical co-ordinator.

Spurs are pressing ahead with their attempts to sign Emmanuel Adebayor from Manchester City following his loan spell last season, while the likes of Loic Remy, Joao Moutinho, and Hugo Lloris have been mentioned as potential targets.

The Londoners were given a huge boost last week when Gareth Bale signed a new four-year contract and expect to free up a significant portion of their wage budget by selling a number of fringe players including Vedran Corluka, Niko Kranjcar, Giovani dos Santos, David Bentley and Heurelho Gomes.

Villas-Boas convinced Spurs that he has not been been scarred by his eight-month experience at Chelsea and fits the club’s desire for a young, progressive manager who can make the most of the new training ground in Enfield, lower the average age of the squad and find value in the transfer market.

Down and out? Luka Modric (left) looks set to quit Tottenham

However, one of his most pressing tasks will be convincing Luka Modric to stay. The Croatian has his heart set on a move to Real Madrid.Spurs sources claim Tottenham will try to negotiate a way for striker Gonzalo Higuain to be part of any deal to take Modric to the Bernabeu. Villas-Boas is a huge fan of Argentina forward Higuain and tried to sign him during his time as manager of Chelsea last season. Whether Higuain would consider leaving Madrid for a team not playing in the Champions League remains to be seen.

Welcome to White Hart Lane AVB, here are five problems you must immediately solve

By ADAM SHERGOLD PUBLISHED: 11:05 GMT, 3 July 2012 | UPDATED: 11:25 GMT, 3 July 2012

Tottenham fans are digesting the news that Andre Villas-Boas has been named as the club's new manager, just seven weeks after Harry Redknapp guided them to fourth place in the Barclays Premier League.

The 34-year-old's appointment will create some concern at White Hart Lane following his disastrous tenure at west London rivals Chelsea last season. Villas-Boas lasted just 27 league matches at Stamford Bridge, failing to convince the fans, players or owner Roman Abramovich that he was capable of delivering success.

In order to avoid a repeat at Spurs, AVB must hit the ground running.

article-2168135-0000A98500000CB2-386_468x394.jpg

Plenty to ponder: AVB has a number of issues to resolve now he has taken the hot seat at White Hart Lane

1. Win over the dressing room and the supporters

At no stage during his eight-month spell at Chelsea did Villas-Boas carry the full support of the dressing room. Already one of the most hierarchical squads in the Premier League, the Portuguese's age counted against him.

He was 33 when he took over at Stamford Bridge, younger than senior players such as Frank Lampard and barely older than captain John Terry.

With no playing career and only a few years' coaching experience, he lacked the gravitas of older managers and when results didn’t go their way, the dissenting voices grew.

In the end, Abramovich directly blamed these critics within the squad for the premature end to the Villas-Boas 'project.'

But after a number of chastening defeats, including the 3-1 defeat against Napoli that left them on the brink of exiting the Champions League, the fans had run out of patience as well.

article-2168135-0E05E7EF00000578-263_468x368.jpg

Undermined: AVB never had respect from the likes of Lampard and Terry

At Spurs, Villas-Boas must strike up an immediate rapport with his squad. This should be easier than at Chelsea with fewer headstrong personalities in the dressing room and he has the advantage of a full pre-season to shape his plans.

A strong start in the league will banish the disappointment of Spurs missing out on Champions League qualification and help win over the fans, who would probably have wanted a more experienced manager.

2. Resolve the Luka Modric question… quickly

An immediate priority will be to resolve the future of Luka Modric, who is reportedly coveted by Real Madrid and a long-term target for Manchester United.

The Croatia playmaker, who was an integral part of Tottenham's success under former manager Harry Redknapp, has made no secret of his desire to play Champions League football again.

Although no firm offers have been received from the Spanish champions, they could test Spurs with an offer in the region of £40million or offer a player in return – such as Argentina striker Gonzalo Higuain, who was a target for Villas-Boas when at Chelsea.

article-2168135-13AC60DF000005DC-169_468x339.jpg

Out of Luka: Modric looks certain to leave and the club will need to replace him

With Modric uninspired by the prospect of another season in the Europa League, Villas-Boas must waste no time in persuading one of the most influential players in his squad to have faith in his plans.

It will be a tough sell, with Modric eager to compete for silverware domestically and in European competition. But it comes as a relief to Villas-Boas that his other star player, Gareth Bale, has already signed a new contract.

3. Strengthen the defence

To compete for the Premier League, Villas-Boas needs to ensure Spurs have a watertight defence, which will undoubtedly mean going in to the transfer market.
The first priority will be to finalise a deal with Ajax for Jan Vertonghen.

Negotiations for the Belgian defender have dragged on all summer, to the point where he is already back in pre-season training with the Dutch club. But with most of the hard work completed, Villas-Boas should be able to quickly seal the deal.

Doubts remains over how often Ledley King will feature in the forthcoming new season.

article-2168135-1337DA93000005DC-518_224x423.jpg

Back line? Kaboul and Vertonghen could line-up next to each other

He will put his troublesome knee to the test during training but may be forced into retirement, where he is expected to be offered a coaching role.

Such is his influence, if King breaks down again, it will leave a massive hole in the back line - despite the impressive form of Younes Kaboul and impending return of Michael Dawson from injury

Vedran Corluka has already departed White Hart Lane this summer, joining Lokomotiv Moscow for £5m, but the need for defensive acquisitions is less urgent than bringing in placements up front.

4. Bolster the strikeforce

Following the departure of Louis Saha this summer and Emmanuel Adebayor's return to parent club Manchester City, Spurs have only one recognised striker on their books – Jermain Defoe.

Defoe scored 17 club goals last season - despite spending much of it on the bench - but didn't feature in England’s Euro 2012 campaign beyond a 15-minute cameo against France.

Therefore, Villas-Boas will have to immediately dip into the transfer market to buy at least two strikers, though his cause will be helped by the considerable war chest expected to be put at his disposal by chairman Daniel Levy.

article-2168135-13BF1DF2000005DC-922_468x421.jpg

Bench warmer? Defoe is now the club's only recognised striker

Aside from Higuain, Villas-Boas reportedly has his sights on 22-year-old Chelsea frontman Daniel Sturridge, with a £10m bid being lined up.

Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo is keen to hang on to the player, who is desperate for more regular first-team football.

Spurs have also been linked to emerging Russia player Alan Dzagoev, who impressed by scoring three goals from an attacking midfield position at Euro 2012.

5. Change his habits

Villas-Boas often looked exhausted and exasperated at Chelsea as a result of the long days he put in on the training ground and in preparing the team.

He reportedly slept overnight at Cobham in a Japanese-style pod, was the first to arrive and the last to leave most days, and spent hours poring over technical data about his players.

But his 'workaholic' approach didn't exactly produce the desired results and it may be more effective and productive to occasionally take a step back from preparations.

His obsessive attention to detail meant he didn’t realise soon enough how alienated and disheartened the Chelsea dressing room had become.

Boost for Spurs as Modric move to Real faces collapse over huge £35m transfer fee

By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER PUBLISHED: 06:12 GMT, 6 July 2012 | UPDATED: 06:12 GMT, 6 July 2012

Stall: Luka Modric (centre) wants a move to Real Madrid sorted quickly

Reports in Spain claim Madrid must sell before they can buy and Modric, 26, is reluctant to demand a move away from White Hart Lane, according to The Sun. Chelsea failed with a bid of £30m for the playmaker last summer as Spurs dug their heels in.New manager Andre Villas-Boas will be keen to hold on to Modric but has already made plans to replace him.

Hope? Tottenham fans may yet see Modric (right) in action again

Gylfi Sigurdsson snubbed Liverpool to join the White Hart Lane club and Lassana Diarra has also emerged as a target. Spurs will not be held to ransom as Modric's contract runs until 2016 but it remains to be seen if Villas-Boas can convince him his future lies at a club who will not feature in the Champions League.
