Why is 4D/ Toto such a normalised expense/ pastime of many diff groups of people (uni students, retirees, officers workers, market aunties/ uncles, etc.)?

General

When I (30F) first came to SG, this was the #1 culture shock for me. Not the prices of things compared to MY, not the “kiasu” people, not even the queues at food stalls … How is it that a nation with such a strong currency actually enjoys this as a hobby/ fav weekday weekend activity or wtv?? Can someone please explain why many people here love it so so much?

I noticed it’s not just buying numbers but playing mahjong with betting $$$ involved, or playing poker $$$ during home-based get together sessions, etc. Money + games seem to be quite a norm and I usually hear the mahjong tiles being shuffled every Friday night at my HDB. The sound is unmistakably distinct.

My colleagues at my 2nd job here were also very shocked to find that I had never, not once in my life, purchased a gambling ticket in MY before coming to Singapore. Tbh, no one in my family has and my friends that I hang out with back home don’t either.

I am rly curious but also want to uds this culture/ mindset!

In the most expensive city in the world, up to 90% of its residents need to "buy hope" which is their only way to own a private home and a car.
