Is Singapore's (lack of) social safety net sustainable?
GeneralSingapore's model is pro business, low tax
There is no unemployment benefits
There are little protection for workers when it comes to retrenchments, to facilitate the MNCs to move their offices here without fearing large financial losses if they decide to back out
It's also to ensure businesses have a constant supply of desperate workers
As for elderly care, the government is trying to make CPF stretch longer by increasing the contribution ceiling, adjusting the withdrawal age as appropriate, introducing CPF life etc
Then families are expected to cover the shortfall
Only if the families genuinely can't afford it will the government step in
But now due to AI, and our expensive labour force, more and more companies are moving away from Singapore
Parents are also having fewer children, thus increasing the burden on each
Then this generation is having record-low TFRs , so it's only gonna get worse
For how long can Singapore sustain this business-friendly-at-the-expense-of-workers model?
