1 dies in Toa Payoh flat fire

A PERSON died in a fire that started in a flat at Block 31, Toa Payoh Lorong 6 last night.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said the body was so badly burnt that it could not determine if it was a man or woman.
It received a call at 7.20pm. Three ambulances, a fire engine, a Red Rhino fire truck and two fire fighting bikes were dispatched to the block.
The body was found in the living room.
Neighbours said they heard an explosion from the flat on the ninth floor. It caused a blackout affecting almost 200 flats in the one-room rental block where many elderly folk live.
Many of them were evacuated. Some had difficulty breathing and were tended to by SCDF officers. Others rested on plastic chairs nearby.
