A SINGAPORE navy warship is said to have damaged an underwater cable at a Darwin naval base after the vessel's anchor became entangled in the power line.
The RSS Tenacious, a 141m-long stealth frigate from the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN), had been taking part in sea drills off the coast of Australia's Northern Territory before the incident occurred.
After the six-day maritime exercise ended last Friday, the warship anchored in Darwin Harbour.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Defence yesterday, port authorities informed crew members of the Tenacious on Friday afternoon that the warship might be anchored 'too close to some underwater cables'.
Mindef spokesman Desmond Tan said: 'The Royal Australian Navy Port Services advised RSS Tenacious to relocate to a new anchorage position.'
When crew aboard the frigate attempted to retrieve the anchor in the afternoon, they found it had become tangled with an underwater cable, Colonel Tan said.
