REAL FAST Harddisks coming

wah 2 nividia cards in sli?

You don't game so you need 2 cards for what??

Yes ati cards run cooler they have power saving features but i believe nvidia should have it too, take my 5970 for eg it runs around like mid 40 degrees on idle and has rarely ever exceeded 80C even on heavy loads which is very very different from my 8800GTX last time. 480GTX are definitely much much hotter.

.

Each nvidia card can only support 2 monitor, so I need 2 of them to run three 24" monitors.

I get the impression that nvidia is more interested in achieving brute speed :) While Ati has traditionally been the underdog & tries to compete with a more elegant product. Some people claim that ATI has more stable drivers than nvidia.

wow your nvidia card must be high end to have 2 divx outputs.

Ati has had many hot fixes with their drivers and for some reason their drivers don't seem to do very well with a multiple card setup. It's been some time since i have used a multiple card setup on ati cos i have not used my 4870 x2 + 4870 tri fire card setup for months since the beginning of this yr although the 5970 is considered sort of a dual card setup taking up space for 1 slot.

I'm not very sure about nvidia cos the last card i have with them is a 9800gx2.

Yeah although i have heard about ppl saying ati cards produce better quality movies and 3D rendering. Btw it's no more called ati. It's amd cards now. Amd bought over ati and has renamed it.

Anyway ati gave nvidia a very good run for it's money with the 4000 series and also the 5000 series was released half a yr earlier compared to the 400 series of nvidia and the new amd card should be better than nvidia it has really eaten into nvidia profits and nvidia is producing heat monster cards that is like a furnace if you use more than 1 card in your system.

I prefer to pick something in the higher end, so that I don't have to update so often. However must draw the line at the latest & greatest monster cards which cost as much as the computer

Since I have my machine turned on for long periods, my current setup can run uncomfortably hot in the afternoons especially when I also have my 2nd PC running. However my 2nd PC only has a single 22" monitor connected.:)

Sometimes don't know what to use to describe those non-nvidia cards; ATI, Radeon, AMD :)

Apple is using nvidia in their laptops & there were some quality issues on some of them. Nvidia may be over extending themselves. I think these cards have reached a level of performance that would satisfy the majority of users. Not many users out there who can afford to upgrade every 6 -12 months & with machines like the iPad becoming popular, nvidia's market share is going to suffer.

Chey! I thot you meant Real Hard Dicks Cumming!

Cannot imagine yr thread was so innocent.

This is example from Seagate, but I am sure every brand will produce their own. It mixed Solid State (Flash) with Winchester HDD. There is 4GB of SSD in this 500GB Winchester example. That flash is another layer of cache from which the drive will transfer data to the slower HDD at time that users are not awaiting. Unlike the RAM (upto 64MB these days) cache the Flash are not lost when power is suddenly lost. HDD these days use their spindle mass to store some power to flush their RAM Cache when power is lost, but this is very limited. 4GB of Flash is only few dollars these days, so it is worthwhile.

why would nvidia's market share suffer?

Have you considered water cooling?

Actually wc is kind of a bitch unless you're a crazy overclocker.

Yeah ati has various names for their brands same as nvidia. Nvidia's desktop gpus are called geforce. Their gpus for designers are called quadro.

Ati's is called radeon but it's been renamed to amd anyway.

are u running a business to require so many screens?

are u running a business to require so many screens?

Some reasons why nvidia may have problems:
1) Nvidia had some quality issues compared to Radeon cards.
2) Radeon cards are more attractive than nvidia because of the lower power requirements .
3) There's a recession so many don't have the $$$ to upgrade as frequently
4) With the popularity of low cost machines like iPad, that won't need a graphics card. RAM manufactures are reporting a fall in demand for memory because they suspect people are turning to machines like iPad.

Water cooling was a fad :) If you visit Sim Lim, you now don't see many WC systems being offered. The new CPUs are running cooler & only the high end GPUs are generating more heat.

I'm a wannabe investor. If you are relying on technical analysis, you need alot of screen space for graphs. You also need spare PCs as a backup.
