Firstly, if you saying “that part of the problem with the SMRT breakdowns last week is due to SMRT staffs not being trained in emergency preparedness”, then that is SMRT’s fault. But do not blame the staff when the organization is at fault. I think the govt should do something to correct this blatant complacency being displayed here by SMRT.
Secondly, “they cannot converse in English good, well enough”. How good and well enough do you have to be in English to direct the passengers. I really do not understand why the staff are targeted when it’s SMRT’s fault. Staff being not trained enough is SMRT’s fault.
Thirdly, it is very disgusting and pathetic for an MP to make comments that are obviously racially motivated. As a leader of a constituency, I really expect more from him. I’m extremely disgusted that he actually brought up the point on the Indian’s and Malay’s english when his own English is bad. Buck up. Don’t comment about other people when you’re no better.Even if you want to bring to light that a PR rep mentioned that some staffs are “Malay(s), they are Indians, they cannot converse in English good, well enough”, there is definitely a better way to do so. But frankly I find it extremely useless to to even mention that there is a language barrier. It does not help remedy the situation or the trains. Fix the trains instead of saying useless comments.
And to MP Seng Han Thong, if you have nothing good to say, don’t say anything. It doesn’t help fix the trains but it does make Singaporeans angry.
And I really hope the trains do not breakdown anymore.

Wow after seeing this, i feel so ashamed to be Singaporean. What happened to all the moral education that we’ve been taught at school? Clearly the MPs are setting a very bad example especially to the younger generation. Whats worse, these scums of an MP get away with it … while they whip the citizens with all sorts of laws when we try to speak up. This is double-standard rearing its head …. Singapore is not democratic, its COMMUNISTIC in my opinion. You and your cohorts are no different to the likes of Hitler and KJI. People like this nincompoop of an MP should step down! you didnt get my vote this GE and ur never getting one ever, same goes to the rest of your cohorts! SHAME ON U

I have been listening and watching this video recording again and again… Mr Seng Han Tong…. it is NOT about the local SMRT staff could not communicate well in English whether the SMRT Staff is of local Malay, Indians or Chinese for that matter. Most of the time,we, as in Singaporeans (Malay, Indian and Chinese) have been speaking in English and our mother tongue too. It is the PRs and other commuters who were caught in the situation who could NOT understand English that complained. They are the ones who should be Mr. Se adapting to the Singapore environment ie. able to communicate in simple or “broken” English..and not resorting to their “home” language… of which in this context from mainland China. Please do not pinpoint the Malay or Indian SMRT staff for not being able to communicate in the PRs’ home language. Mr Seng Hang Thong you should highlight this manner. Give kudos to the ground SMRT staff who did their best what they could do that was within their jurisdiction. 2ndly SMRT should made good use of their public announcement system in the 4 Singapore Official Languages of the situation to inform and guide commuters so that they can continue to their final destination. Of course it would be good to have YOU a public apology from you (with no excuses).
