The thieves smashed cages and tanks at the reptile holding area of the Australian Reptile Park, north of Sydney, late on Sunday night.

The zoo said at least 23 rare animals were stolen but it was unsure exactly which animals and how many were missing. The stolen animals include iguanas, dragon lizards, tortoises and at least one baby American alligator less than 8-inches long.

‘It definitely looks like the people that broke in knew what they wanted and were taking all lengths to get it, obviously doing a lot of damage in their path,’’ said Liz Vella, a senior curator at the zoo.

‘‘There are some rare exotic species in there that need specialised care, so we’re very worried about their health and safety.”

Authorities believe the animals were probably stolen to be sold on the black market and have urged the public to alert authorities if any are sighted. It is believed most of the animals are too young to be dangerous and that the total value was about £6,000.

“These guys obviously came in with the purpose of taking the animals. They definitely knew what they wanted,” Ms Vella said.

“If anybody hears any information about animals being sold or sees anything with exotic reptiles, definitely please give the police a call and hopefully we will get some of them back.”

The theft occurred between 11pm and midnight and took less than 10 minutes.

Police said the thieves had a good knowledge of the park and warned that the animals will quickly die without proper care.

"At this point in time we are following a number of enquiries which includes viewing CCTV,” said Inspector George Bradbury. “We're hoping that will assist us in identifying the persons.”
