A 32-YEAR-OLD Chinese national grabbed a woman who was walking home at night, dragged her into some bushes near an expressway, and then raped her.
After his assault on the 25-year-old woman, also a Chinese national, Dai Yunfa audaciously offered her his mobile phone number so that they could be friends – an offer which she refused.

He also promised to help her look for her mobile phone, which was misplaced during the struggle.

The next evening, he was seen searching in the bushes when the woman returned to the crime scene with police officers.

Yesterday, Dai pleaded guilty in the High Court to one count each of abduction, aggravated rape and resisting arrest for the incidents which took place in September last year.

Dai, who is married with one child in China, came here in 2008 and last worked as a welder.

The victim, who came here to work in 2008 and holds a white-collar job, cannot be named. They do not know each other.

At about 11pm on Sept 8 last year, the woman was walking home from a bus stop in the Jurong area along the Ayer Rajah Expressway. Dai, who was walking along the same path, saw the victim and followed her.

When no one else was present, he grabbed her by the neck, dragged her into some nearby bushes and pinned her down.

She begged him to let her go, offering him her mobile phone and money, asking him to visit a prostitute instead and even offering him oral sex.

But he ignored her pleas and threatened to kill her.

After sexually assaulting her, the pair spent half an hour trying to find her shoes and mobile phone. The victim was eager to get her mobile phone back because she was worried that Dai would get hold of it and gain access to her contact number, as well as those of her friends.

When they failed to find the mobile phone, Dai promised to return the next day to look for it.

He also asked the victim if she wanted to be friends, and offered her his number. But she did not take it down, telling him that she did not want to see him again.

She went home distressed, not wanting anyone to know what had happened.

But the next morning, she decided to visit her company doctor, as she was worried about becoming pregnant or contracting diseases from the rape. The doctor advised her to see a government doctor and, at a polyclinic, she was eventually persuaded to make a police report.

She then went back to the scene with two plainclothes police officers.

From afar, she saw Dai searching in the bushes and alerted one of the officers, who went up to the man and identified himself. Dai got away after a short chase, but was traced to his dormitory and arrested a day later.

Dai’s DNA was found on the clothes the victim was wearing at the time of the rape.

He is expected to be sentenced tomorrow. For committing rape, he faces eight to 20 years in jail, and at least 12 strokes of the cane.
