just the other day on sar zup meh after reunion dinner, went to Kovan nursery to pick up a couple of pots of flowers home, cheaper prices as the stall owners want to clear their stock.

and so me overhead a guy haggling with the assistant over the price of a couple of pots of flower. much of their conversation went unnoticed until the guy said:" 大家都同乡,就算便宜点呗?"

this line caught my attention and me was wondering if the assistant would acquiesce to his request and to my surprise, the assistant actually did. doesn't the assistant need to check with the stall owner before making a decision?

how does he account for the shortfall? remains baffled till today...

Bro, prc 同乡, it's ok one, no need to ask the owner, the assistant calls the shots when it's 同乡.

Seriously, it's things like these or NOT doing things like these that made SG and SG people including businessmen and corporate people valued and respected all over the world.

My worry for this and future generations is that this trait is slowly, slowly, like a drop of rain becoming a pond, eroding away because of negative influences, both from leaders who regard material achievement as their priority and people from other cultures where such traits are not so important.

They are probably Dongbei ren. They are the world's most generous people with other people's things and money. Experienced it before. They will even say "Lai lai lai. Duo na."

Bro, it's more because we either have not been brainwashed or have not developed the pappy wannabe mentality (that PAWS have).

I used to believe that SG and Singaporeans had a competitive advantage because of the general tendency to be strait-laced, incorruptible, fair and just and able to exhibit strong individual and corporate governance which determines the way we deal with others, even if it means less material benefits for ourselves or our family members/relatives/friends or 同乡.

That competitive advantage in my view just isn't there anymore. This can be seen from the number and types of crimes being reported, the interaction we have with others including colleagues, business associates, relatives, acquaintances, service providers, the way people behave and react to situations in public, etc.

Somewhere along our country's short journey, that valuable "trait" got lost.

doing business is all about relations, even some prominent civil servants have to give face to "gaoguan" from important people's relative. i wonder if that is consider flouting any rule under CPIB???
