Sky high COE premiums and private home prices have sharpened the divide between the "haves" and the "have-nots" with the "haves" automatically labeled as "snobbish" by the masses.

they find joy to thump others who are better than them as they are the lowest in the society. So, the highly educated, rich and

The most humble and generous rich S'poreans are from traditionally wealthy families. It is the newly rich who are usually the most snobbish.

During my last trip to JB, I was queuing up at a petrol station, but could not pump my car because a S'pore-registered PHV did not vacate long after filling up. The reason is that the mother and son were stuffing their faces with potato chips standing outside the car while the father was seated inside.

Another example of low SES behaviour is the instance when I heard a mother tell her son loudly in Singlish at a hawker centre: "You eat yourself. I go ATM press money." The mom was trying to show off her spoken English to the seniors seated next to her family, but doing a disservice to her son. How is that child going to learn proper English?

Adding Singlish into the mix serves only to confuse and hinder the learning of Standard English. This accounts for the lack of fluency in spoken English among the majority of adults, in spite of 10 years or more of instruction in an English-medium school environment. Generations of young S'poreans enter the working world hampered by their inability to be understood globally.
